Hi all.... the missus is off to Finland (Northern Lights) and is after thin thermal socks, and I wouldn't mind some myself. Any thoughts?? Loads of chunky ones about (got a drawer full)....but good thin ones????

I've just got myself some Sealskinz Terry, and so far they seem ok. They come in a variety of thermal ratings etc. Not cheap though...i paid £27 for mine.

Merino wool socks brilliant. Snugpak socks brilliant like all their outdoor clothing. Sealskin socks great if you don't want wet feet poor for warmth as they don't release sweat etc. Try and blow the up like a balloon and u will see why.

I had sealskinz which are breathable but waterproof. My feet were dry but the perspiration which passed the breathable membrane then condensed on the outside layers of the sock in cold weather. This led to cold feet.

Hi Terry, yes i do use them, there the thinnest ive tried that actually keep your feet warm, there are probably thinner socks, that don't. They wick away any sweat, which is a must to keep your tootsies from getting cold. Like yourself, ive got loads of the thick woolly type of thermals, but IMO, these work better, and you can always put 2 pairs on if you've got room in your boots for when its really cold. :)

I have the snugpak cool max and also the snugpak combat socks. The combat socks are the warmest socks I have ever used. They only come to your lower calf though. As an ex serviceman also you won't go far wrong with any of the services combat boots socks, I left over 7 years ago and I'm still wearing mine now. Also have a look at the white Arctic socks, all available on eBay. Ref to my comment ref Seal skinz socks, I spent some time doing Arctic warfare and the only cold weather injuries I saw were from 2 of my lads wearing these socks.

Just to finish always take a spare pair of socks. If you think your feet are feeling damp and they will if your wearing wellies or neoprene boots. Change your socks and put your worn pair near your torso to wick out.

There have been a few comments on this thread regarding neoprene wellies and how they can trap perspiration, like ordinary wellies, leading to cold feet. This will be my third winter using arctic sport Muckboots and I can thoroughly recommend them. They have a lining material which wicks away moisture very effectively and I haven't had cold feet at all since starting to use them, poor circulation notwithstanding. Very comfortable with good grip too.
The only downside is that I need a boot jack to get them off, but they're only about a fiver.

Bridgedale socks are in my opinion the best socks you can buy
and I agree with the comment above I use the 1/2 length Muckboot Scrub
