Colin did you find when the Chub were mouthing the bait you were getting any indication on the rod top? Fishing hair rigged baits on the Stour last season I found that by sitting on my hands through all the plucks and knocks, the rod would always eventually keel over and fish on, and I reckon...
A good friend of mine who used to do a lot of river carping caught quite a few fish in conditions like we're having at the moment, I think as long as you've worked out where the fish are the you're in with a good chance of a run. I've found the same with canal carp, as long as the canal isn't...
I use the albright with 12lb drennan sinkbraid to 12lb ESP soft ghost, in testing the rig broke at about 12lb of pressure and never at the knot, always in the braid part of the rig. Never let me down, untill I hooked my last Barbel, when the knot went before the rod had even reached full...
I spent ages looking at brolly systems Neil, and it was a choice between the JRC stealth and the Trakker Specimen. I went for the JRC in the end as unlike the trakker, you can completely zip off the front panel and use it as an open fronted brolly as well as a full bivvy system with the front...
Colin I was given a heated fleece gillet as a joke Christmas present last year, and it's actually really warm. The batteries on mine are quite bulky and heavy, but I'm pretty sure mine is a cheap version and the one in your link would be a lot better.

It's got to be the Thame... As Colin said, a fish that big from that river is an amazing, amazing fish. Especially as its an Oxfordshire fish! (Not many of them left anymore.)
Pah! I had my first ever 4lb+ chub on a smelt deadbait hanging vertically head downwards off a pair of very big trebles, presented very badly at midwater on thick pike wire when I was about twelve.
I seem to remember thinking it was a well presented bait and that I was clearly a good...
After saying I couldn't break the 5lb barrier... I went and had a 6 from the Thames! But then had a 3lber from the Warks Avon so normal service is resumed :D
Tell me about it mate. Going to start fishing the Warks Avon fairly regularly from now on, realised its only a half hour from me! Will keep plugging away on the Thames though, got to happen some time soon....
Cheers for the tips everybody, sounds like I'm going about things in the right way just a matter of luck and time... Or lack of it! Proper bogey species for me at the moment.
Lovely fish Stu. I can't seem to get above 5lb with Chub, which is frustrating to say the least as I know there are much bigger fish in the areas/swims I target.... Any tips for getting through to the bigger fish from you Chub experts (Colin)?
