Which Landing Net

I thought Sam's advice was reasonable.

What's wrong with visiting your local tackle shop? In addition to a decent net you might also get a hatfull of advice on local venues to help you on your way.
There is too much reliance on the internet, if we don't use our local shops we'll loose them, where will you go then for your pint of maggots?

But I also post on that other site so I suppose my opinion is worthless as well.

As for David Will's input to this thread..............Nah, not worth a comment.

Ade, nothing wrong with that advice, but not all tackle shops are so comprehensively stocked or give impartial advice. Certainly not from my experience.

I rarely look at these threads, but then I rarely buy much in the way of "major" tackle items.

Tackle shops won't necessarily give you an impartial comment on the "experience" of owning and using the tackle people ask about.
I'm on my fifth net in 8 years, had the arms snap on one (can't remember the brand); the Fox "Barbel" Net was a joke with handling flow and a horrible shape..............I'm currently on an Abu Garcia because it's cheap, the mesh is fairly coarse and it's, so far, reliable.

Sam, you really don't need to play to the "Dark Side" Gallery so obviously. ;)

It's probably worth expanding on why Sam's advice to visit the tackle shop was sage beyond his years.

The thing about nets is not all landing nets are ideal for all rivers and situations. For instance, if you are fishing the lowland rivers you can get away with using a short handle and a big triangular net as the banks are often quite low, the flows are not too fast and the fish run to mid teens. On the other hand if your chosen river is the Teme and you do a bit of roving one of the game anglers folding nets with a telescopic handle might be more suitable as the swims can be a bit tight and the fish on the middle reaches rarely exceed double figures.
If you normally fish rivers with high banks or shallow beaches you might want to invest in a telescopic handle and perhaps a spoon net, many swear by the old insight one, copied by Korum, though these can be a little difficult to transport. To get over this problem you might like my own personal preference, a Daiwa folding spoon, however I found the pan net it was fitted with was a bit shallow so I replaced it with a deeper one off a triangle net. I should also say that the Daiwa net does have a built in weakness and is prone to breaking if you don't have a bit of mechanical sympathy. While mine landed about 160 barbel to over 11lb last season with no problems I could imagine that in more clumsy hands it would break on the first few fish.
What I'm trying to say is you can get as many recommendations as you like but be careful with your final choice, tackle choice is an area where the old saying, "one man's meat is another man's poison" is very apt.

Adrian,
quite so. However, I could go into five local tackle shops and get no such advice and see not a single one of the products you mentioned. I strongly suspect that many folks would be in the same boat. I'd hazard a guess that many shops would simply palm you off with a 32-36" carp net and handle. Alternatively you'd end up with a Drennan Super Specialist net, which aren't quite big enough at a maximum of 24". The advice to look in a tackle shop is sage enough, on the assumption that whoever is asking for advice is lucky enough to have good, well stocked tackle shops within a reasonable distance of them.

You have asked for a good bit of advice yourself Sam so why knock me for asking about which landing net ?

Sean

because i know how to use the search function and look up stuff thats already been answered, rather than try to rid myself of "new member" status ;)

If thats what you think then it really shows your immaturity !!

I could choose a landing net but there are pitfalls in using them on rivers as others on here have posted about. Its about getting top advice from people who may have been through problems and not going over the same old problems that others have had.

I am not afraid to ask advice and never will be however trivial it may seem to some.

I just hope that when you finish Uni you never ask advice but yes you will as i have 4 graduates working under me and some of the stuff they ask well i wont go into it but i would never mock anyone for asking advice.

This world is a big wheel and what goes around comes around but whilst you did mention post's look at your rate per day compared to mine and i dont go on figures but you should be good at maths so you work it out

Mods please lock this now as i have had some very good answers and i am now sorted !

Why does it say sam is a senior member when he clearly isn't from his angry young dude posts? Bless him, I'm sure his mother loves him.
