That's the point Dave , there is no suitable bit of natural ground anywhere in the uk, to even , lay a barbel on ....I'm sure Ian is experienced enough to know what a suitable bit of natural ground for unhooking is, without a mat.
They should always be put on a padded mat , to protect their internal organs, and as importantly to preserve the natural mucus/slime which protects the fish in its natural environment.....
