What Scales Please?

I’ve had afew sets now and my opinions on those sets are.

Flyweights are awful scales the needle seized on mine and a mates.

Avon’s are fine if they have been looked after they need regular stripping and cleaning

RH9000’s are total crap unless you are a fair weather only fisherman

Korum I’ve not owned but they seem ok but my mate does complain it doesn’t do brilliant on battery life and not much of a handle to grab

Avid digitals ……. Best I’ve ever come across by a country mile.
Cost afew quid mind but Worth every penny. Rock solid, strong, sealed, proper handles, really compact, still on original battery now which is still reading full (could be down to my piss poor catch rate🤣)

Seriously though you’ll buy em once and that’s it.
Perfect scales imo. Wouldn’t change anything about them and that’s saying something because I can usually find a niggle with everything.
They even give you a bloody battery and it’s the common 9v square

Might invest in some of those Rich. My RH9000's are battered, and the body actually split open as the screws or rivets failed. They're currently bodged together with a screw through the top.

That’s cos your hammering them Jon with all those big Severn fish. 🤣
I honestly couldn’t recommend the Avids highly enough. I got mine when they were first released a year ago. Took a punt and couldn’t be happier.

Thanks for all the comments. I will take your advice Richard and buy the Avid scales. Hopefully they won't disappoint me as I have been with the
RH 9000
All I need to do after that is catch something to weigh
Mike

There is no comparison between the RH9000 and the Avids.
After a cold days pike fishing completely finished my digital Reubens off I went and got the Avids. It was @Jon Frisby that first mentioned them on here before they came out and I just went ahead and bought them.
Finished off my pike season with the Avids and weighed afew fish since. They are extremely solid feeling….. got a decent weight to them. Definitely steel frame inside.

The handle on the Avids looks very much like the handle on the Korums, Rich. Battery life on the Korums is also exceptionally good. A 9v too. Battery quality varies, I guess, by manufacturer.

How good are tubular spring balance scales for accuracy? I'm in the market for some lightweight scales myself.

The Korum only has the loop on the top to lift from doesn’t it?
I like T bars to get a good hold of which I guess you’d buy separately for the Korum🤷🏻

The avid has fold out arms.

Knowing my mate he’s probably been putting poundland batteries in it 🤣

Just tested 2 sets of my fishing scales.

used a set of fairly decent electronic kitchen scales and 4 old fashioned 1 and 2lb weights as the base line. They were very close to bang on on those scales.

From 1 lb up to 6lb (I’m roach fishing !) the Avon’s (40lb) weigh consistently between 0.5 and 1oz light.

The cheap electronic eBay luggage scales are better; they weigh 0.3 - 0.7 oz over for the same range.

Last winter I tested the cheap scales against the Avon’s and a set of 60lb Reubens at carp/barbel weights and at various different weights all were within an ounce of so.

At big weights that is good enough for me - so the Avon’s/Reubens now stay at home.

For roach etc I’ll probably still take the Avon’s and then split the difference……

I weigh a pack of sugar, or three packs of flour, maybe 500 gram pack of pasta. If they all weigh correct, I'm happy. The scales have been A okay up till now.
Yeah. That’s a home validation
Perfectly fine for testing them out. A calibration can only be done on scales where you can physically change the accuracy should it be out.

Ah - didn't see the arms. Mine has digits but no arms 😂

I had Flyweights twenty years ago and they were inconsistant at best. On the other hand you could squeeze the sides while you weighed a fish and make it a bit heavier!
Avons now , picked up a second pair for £4 off a carboot this summer. Along with a Hardy flyreel for a fiver.
