What keeps doing this?

That ain`t an eel. They leave `v`s in the bait. Personally I`d say it was a barbel!

Just to keep the guesses flowing, I'd say that the assumption of one creature is wrong. I reckon that's the result of multiple fish whittling away, that just happens to have taken the shape of one large bite.

Snakehead.

.............................. I'll get my coat.

Happens to me reguarly on the Thames when fishing meat and I've always been told it's eels. Mouths to small to take a big lump hence the bites out of a chunk. Logical.

Duncan.

Eel gets my vote and more on the Teme in particular this year then previous sesaons

Me too, it's the Teme therefore it's minnows, without a doubt...I think:eek:

Well, that COULD explain the 'wobbling' (almost vibrating) of the quiver tip when this has happened. I always thought (hoped!) it was bigger fish playing with the bait, but i suppose lots of small fish would have the same effect?

Furthermore, I have been 'catching' LOTS of minnows lately. At one point, I was bringing in a minnow impaled with the size 6 hook every cast. Kinda felt sorry for the blighters! Anyone else have this happen?

oh yes, right through it's body....

A decent roach can do that to a bait, if it was minnows, gudgeon etc I would expect all the corners to be whittled away, not just one side!

On the lea this season caught about 6 ducks in 2 sesions. They fight like wimps compared to barbel. Got them on maggots on 3lb line. I really felt sorry for them though. Most were hooked in the bill, one in the tongue though-ouch!

i caught a baby coot in my young days on a canal, poor thing.
the poor mum weren't to happy either.

The first bird I ever caught when I was only 12 was a swan. Not sure who panicked more, the swan or I... Fortunately fishing barbless hook which slipped after a short duration whilst being helped out by more experienced anglers.

Hello Marc,
Absolutely no doubt it is eels. I have had them do this on my local Rother, and have seen them doing it this Summer at Throop.
All the best
Colin
