Very disappointing

Adam Wylie

Senior Member & Supporter
Went for a walk this morning with the wife and the dog ,along a stretch of the river Trent that I sometimes
Fish. The River was quite a few feet up from the rain we had recently. What was disappointing was the amount of
RUBBISH !!!! That had been left behind by Anglers, this is a day ticket stretch that holds some Big Barbel and Carp.
There was plastic bottles, bait packets, silver foil, cans, discarded fishing line ,even though there is a bin especially put there for discarded line ??.what is wrong with these people ??? ,it's so easy to take away with them !! Not all the pegs were like this of course, but it's so bloody irresponsible .

Adam, this is a MASSIVE pet hate of mine. I walk my local rivers a lot here in Norfolk and take a carrier bag with me to pick up "so called" anglers rubbish. Can't say anything too non PC but a lot of them aren't "true" anglers. However, the public perception is that they are fishermen and that gives us all a bad name.
It really does wind me up

Unfortunately an idiot is still an idiot whether he goes fishing or not. Eventually someone from the council will ban fishing there and these ‘characters’ will disperse to other venues and ruin them. This is another reason that anglers tend to be a little secretive about where they are catching. A shame but this is more about society rather than fishing.

I can’t get my head round these people, like Graham says it’s a social issue. I don’t know anyone personally that would litter and I’m confident that almost every parent at my kids school would brain their kids for doing it. There’s a minority of people out there that just don’t care about anything or anyone else.

Couple of years ago I was fishing the trent when a boat moored up just upstream of me there were a couple of bushes in between us but after a while being a nosey person I walked up to top of the flood bank
and saw the group from the boat had BBQ going on the bank and having a nice time
later they went past gave a wave when I packed up the next morning and drove past I had to stop there were the remains of 2 disposable BBQs a few beer tins food wrappers well basically I filled a bin bag and just managed to squeeze it into my car to drop off in the nearest lay by bin
MY POINT IS
anyone seeing this would instantly blame anglers ! and yet anyone dog walkers anyone can leave rubbish its not ALLWAYS Anglers

AND YEA I get it if its line etc OBVIOUSLY :)

Hi men,

As in fishing etiquette, as in social behaviour, if you have to point it out you have lost because if they feel it's ok to cast over you or leave crap behind in the first place then their mindset is wrong and probably won't change . Litter and flytipping is at high levels at the mo , drives me mad .

Funny I'm having a meeting wit two councillors, rights of way officer , roads officer, and local development officer over the use of the little dead end lane I live in . People are accessing a fantastic section of footpath and the quarry over council land at the end of the lane , people walking are in danger of being hit by 4x4 and bikes , and they are flytipping . Iv told them that it can all be sorted with concrete blocks just to stop them , but they feel it's a rights of way issues to do that but after 6 flytips and the cost of clearing it they want a site visit 🙄

In the beginning, God made idiots! Just for practice and when he was satisfied with the results he made littler louts. He then progressed to football hooligans, politician's and such of that ilk.

A few years ago one of my clubs did a deal with a local day ticket water. I went once. There was a dumpster for use of anglers, about 6/8 cubit metres with a round top with slid from side to side. It was open, full to the brim of rubbish plus piled up another 2 ' with further rubbish all around the sides on the floor which had fallen as the bin was so overloaded. I watched fishermen throw rubbish onto the top of the pile and watched it fall to land with the other detritus on the floor. Then walk away! Not been back!

Hi Mark, seen a TV program about something very similar regarding the flytipping. They set up a couple of secret hidden cameras, the culprits were caught, and were demanded to clear it or would be prosecuted, they couldn,t get it back on the back of their truck quick enough.

Happens in my back yard on the Humber, all sorts of crap bottles line hooks etc sometimes left after the yearly cod hunt is in full swing , once some idiots carried a disposable toilet 1/2 a mile down the bank then dumped it down the grass bank , nice !

Wow. On my nearest local club water of about 2.5 acres , on farm land, behind locked gates, membership circa 300, in Feb, 16 tea bags found discarded in one peg, after just one day session. No wonder water level is high!

About 5/6 years ago i saw a farmer empty a trailor of rubbish ,most was jumbo bags, into the dove, he had a look round ,didn't see me behind a small tree and high grass, backed up to the edge of the river and tipped , i couldn't believe what i was seeing, got the camera out and as it floated down towards me took a few shots ,but it was sinking and was hard to make it out in the photos, sent the photos to the ea by email with a description of what had gone on, but whether they followed up the report ,not sure, this is just another instance of society not giving a toss,,,,,

Same here Paul I passionately hate anglers (and they know who they are) that do this. They're not anglers in my eyes, but quite simply I liken them, to the slimy scum that sits in the bottom of our rivers quite frankly! They probably live in sh£* holes themselves mate. 😊

It's a bad advert for angling, and spoils it for the rest of the decent men/women anglers out there.

One fishery I visit actually provides a huge 10m skip for all our rubbish the fishery owner was astonished to find that someone had brought and dumped their old kitchen units in the skip.

It is very sad as Jim has said in post 15, that society don't give a "toss" and despite the " Keep Britain Tidy" campaign it does not get any better.

Consequences and actions spring to mind along with respect for ourselves and others we have far too many of the " ring the bell I'm on the bus" brigade.

Billy Connolly said "wherever you go never take an idiot with you. You can always find one when you get there."

Try living in Bradford. They've gone from using the little metal canisters of recreational laughing gas to big bottles, just like plumbers propane bottles. These get lobbed staright out of the car window along with everything else. Mostly McD, KFC, monster energy crap and the like.

The entire problem is a small (but growing) element of society.
