The secret life of Fox rods

There's something weird going on with Fox rods. When their range is current there tends not to be much positive comment on them. Very often they get cleared at rock bottom prices by the likes of Climax. Then, somewhere down the line, prices climb above and beyond the clearance price. Given enough time they sometimes exceed the original RRP.

How is it that Fox rods seem to get better, more highly regarded and increase in value with time?

a tackle shop owner tells me fox are all the place at the moment as a company.

Improve with age, like fine wine :D

Does make you wonder though, doesn't it? If a rod is a genuine classic, an exceptional gem amongst the general chaff, then fair enough....but some of these are not classics in any way. Talking up on ebay maybe, riding the wave on the back of genuine stuff?

Cheers, Dave.

I've got one of the Fox barbel plus rods , the 1-3/4 tc green blank, still going strong, been well abused, has a lovely action and still looks like new! From an era when Fox produced good gear, they seem to have lost their reputation in recent years. ESP seem to have overtaken them, most of their gear is good quality, and readily available. If you get a chance to get one of those early green rods, snap 'em up!

Chris,

I think Pete Tesch still uses his old fox 1.75 barbel plus rods, i borrowed one once when i snapped the tip on one of my infinities when putting his rods in my car. I was quite impressed with them after managing to pull a manic carp out of a thames weir on one. I had a set of Fox Zandermasters for about 5 years until i sold them to John Costello and they were really nice rods, i just never got to use them much. But, the floodwater duo, i could never get on with in spite of them being quite popular.

I have a Fox Barbel Special 1⅓ T.C. Avon / Quiver that I bought 12 years ago, and if I had to choose just one rod from my collection that would be it.

Hi Paul, i know Steve W still uses a pair of those green Fox ones in the 1-1/2 tc, Havnt seen alot better for the money! They were well cheap

I got 2x fox 15ft barbel xtreme for £105.00 each he got 29 in and sold them all in 2 week everywhere else was £179.00 each

As Chris has noted - i'm after a fox duo-lite avon to pair with one i got second hand last year for £50. There is one on EBAY at £43 with 2 days to go, so i would imagine it will go for a lot more.

It's a cracking rod though - if anyone can suggest an equivalent let me know because i'm struggling to get one! Don't suggest the Wilson one, i've got one and i think it's a bit clunky.

Had me a pair of the barbel duo floodwater rods off there this week,£130 delivered, cant wait to try them out, feel like a nice solid rod.

I quite fancied adding a Duo Lite Specimen 2.75lb, as a big river flood rod, to my already extensive collection of barbel rods but this thread has confused me.

Do i get one now, at the standard retail price of £120 or do i wait until Climax sell them off for £60. I'm worried they might sell out before i get one at the cheaper rate and i'll end up having to pay £150 to get one off e-bay!

the new version of the flood water rod does not come with the quiver tips or quiver section so i say get them while u can im tempted to buy a third rod as a back up and even the float rod version.

I've been a fan of the fox barbel range since the green 1.5lb and had a pair as tench rods even before I found what they were made for;) I replaced them with a pair of the kevlex ARD0001 multi tips followed with a pair of kevlex specialists ARD0002 and lastly with a kevlex barbel float 13' ARD0003 I had the set:D. Add a pair of 12' floodwater extremes, the originals not duo lite ones, and finaly a duo lite specialist float 13' and you could say I like fox rods. All got at heavily discounted prices or from eBay before they got hard to find. Can't see the advantage of thd Kevlar over the kevlex and the even madder prices the make, anyone know the answer to that one ?

My duo is a brown colour, the duo lite is a green colour, theres a pair of barbel duo xs 1.75lb on ebay,£64 at the moment.

Nope, no answer, especially as I rather suspect that it's the same blank with a different reel seat and different colour finish.

Can't see the point of a quiver top on a flood rod so the new rod makes much more sense to me. Would rather pay for one good top than have to pay for one I don't need. I bought my lad the 11ft FX and it looks much better than the earlier rods to me with a Fuji reel seat and fewer, bigger eyes. I was going to get a pair of the flood rods for myself but I think I am going to go for the Drennan Martin Bowler rod now.

Roll on June.
