The Dave Mason Award.

For the most notable Barbel catch of last season........ my vote would go to Lol Breakspear's middle Severn fish of 13.10. I know bigger fish have come from other rivers but a fish of that calibre is really remarkable from the middle Severn.
Voting is restricted to BS members so don't forget to contact Howard Cooke to put your nomination forward. :)

Rich.

Surely Kev Gittins new Severn record must get the award, BS or not for sheer dedication to the cause the captor deserves it IMO.

Rich are you joking. Definitely a bit fish for the middle . But Kevin gittens fish broke the river record . No brainer for me .

No....not joking.... Lol's fish for the area was huge... And it was witnessed by two anglers too. I am sure that if you spent most of the week fishing a potential area after a period of time, probability states you would eventually catch the biggest..... Numbers game..... In Lol's case he fishes occasionally but at the right time right place..... That is why with having caught two 13's this season from the lower and middle, based on the hours put in, he deserves the cup. the award has to take into account that fishing is fishing..... And most that do it have a real life.

The lower probably only has a a very few fish that exceed 15lb at the moment, I even me have caught Barbel that are approaching 14 lb and that is in areas that are well fished in comparison to where Kev fishes, and add in the sheer vastness of the lower coupled with access problems away from the club stretches I think his fish was remarkable.
He is not a 'lucky' short session angler but puts the time in, a lot of time and effort, however I am not the best on here to comment on him, his mate Chris Cheshire would be, but with all the challenges the real lower throws up his fish is without equal, in my opinion.
I have spent a few hours walking the Lower recently, I have it in my mind that I too might catch a real lump, but I also wonder if I have enough years left :(

Yes...pretty daunting isn't it Neil when you sit and look at it......
Oh......Lol Breakspear can hardly be described as a "lucky" short session angler...... :) however he does not spend every waking hour fishing so there is the conundrum..... where do you draw the line? At some point, as I have already said, the number of hours that someone dedicates to a goal has to be off set by the fact that, assuming a certain skill level, it is a matter of probability that you eventually catch the goal..... but like you quite rightly say, for most people life only allows so much time to go fishing and it is then a matter of whether you die first!! :)

Rich . So Kevin's fish wasn't huge for the area .? It's the river record for ffs . And the comment about the witness ? Explain plz . Still going on about that . Shocking .

I didn't for one minute allude to Lol being lucky, although it could be easily be read as such in my reply, apologies for that.

Certainly is daunting, and like most I have a plan for the Lower that normally sees me heading for the Wye

I was simply covering...before any asked...whether the fish that Lol caught had witnesses. The fish of which you talk is huge...no doubt about it, the point I am making is set out in my last post...that's all.
Stephen....I have nothing to do with the BS per say....just that I wanted to encourage those who look in here who are members to at least put someone forward...Lol in my case. Mind you in every forum on the net BS members appear to be in the minority...and from the post made above by Tony Rocca, even on the societies own forum! :D

For those that haven't followed a similar thread on FB, there is an outstanding nomination for a very young female angler who in a session on the Wye (a club stretch I believe), banked a few barbel including a fish of just over 10lb. Great stuff.

Female or Male young or old makes no difference to me, it's the barbel that is the star, I am sure some will vote for this Howard, but I prefer merit.

Thanks Neil. It will be Dave Mason's decision ultimately given he has generously offered to award a trophy at the Show on Sunday. Dave wanted this to be a BS thing only, so nominations by members in relation to a capture by a BS member. Dave has stressed that the best barbel wont necessarily be the biggest so I guess it comes down to the circumstances of the capture. Its good to have a variety of nominations though to make Dave's job particularly difficult.

Rich if Kev was a well know angler would you be asking the same. Both massive barbel

Not sure what you are getting at Deano..... whether an angler is famous or not has no bearing on how much time they have to fish..... Unless the famous angler is full time sponsored and does not have a "normal" job. Then it is a matter of having to catch to fill web or paper pages!!!
