Tench

No, not at all similar. The Drennan Sedge has a set back eye and is a finer wire hook, while the TMC 2457 has a set forward eye and is thicker in the wire.

Looks like it Chris, oh well. Beats watching repeats on the telly :D Just!!

Si, i dont think i could get away with those fine wire hooks on the water park apart from maybe one or two pits; even in spring the weed can be mid water and when margin fishing the tench bolt straight out to get to it. Nice shape though. Gonna order some pallatrax ooks from the shop i fink. ;)

Had quite a lot of fish on fake red maggot in the spring/summer, the enterprise curly ones soaked in betalin. Anyone else tried this or any other flavours/stimulaters/sweeteners?

Paul

Yeah, I now use fake maggots and caters all the time. I don't flavour the casters, coz I fish em in a small PVA ball full of caster, and ol tinca just sucks the whole lot in. I often flavour the maggots with Squid and Octopus though when feeder fishing. I've still not used fakes on the float, though I'm sure it will work, with flavouring them making them easier to find.

And I may be accompanying Mr Law on some of those early morning walks...:)

Yeah, nice pics Ian.

Si, i didnt try em, but i will. Think there's some in the bfw shop; Hinders dont sell em. The only hook that didnt straighten was the korum 12 S5s and i cant get them locally anymore. What was really surprising was that the size 12 korda choddy and 12 & 14 drennan barbel specialists and fox armapoints ssbp all opened out and i've has some very good barbel on all of those hooks.

Ive just bought some of the new mustad eyd specialists 6033NPBLN in 10,12 & 14. They look good and are supposed to be very strong, but i suppose i'll find out soon enough.

Paul

Paul,

Not sure if the Mustad 6033NPBLN you mention is the 'Carp Power' hook?

I've (had) to use the 60329NPBLN 'carp power' on occasion, which is a barbless pattern, and found them good.

I've mostly use the (purple packet) Mustad 60333BLN 'eyed specialist' long points for a couple of seasons, when wanting for a small, VERY strong hook for maggot feeder work or the straight lead for tench. Generally my first choice from 12 - 16's. Found them awesome!

Before that, I used the Mustad 'eyed power specialist' long points. (no pattern number on packet). These were awesome too! But no longer available I believe? Or so I was told, when I bought the last few packs off the lads in Alans of Wuzzy a couple of years ago. (I only have 3 packs of 16's left)

I'm lead to believe the 60333BLN 'eyed specialist' hooks have replaced them.

They are indeed exactly the same pattern and gauge, but a better colour IMO, now being black nickel, hi carbon steel. As opposed to shiny silver nickel.

Very, very strong for their size. And only a pound a pack!

Worth a try at the least, I think you will like!?

Darreyl.

If anybody would like a FREE sample of the Pallatrax hooks then just drop me a PM or email.

Simon, glad to read you still rate the hook.. have you seen the 14 and 16's ;)
and if you're after a bit of bait to drive them crazy try the Jungle .... had tench 'crawling' up the rods on the stuff :D

Hi Simon,
Likewise maggot, casters, corn or worm for most of my tenching but I stumbled across their penchant for Jungle when barbelling on the river last summer and the summer before. Could not keep a bait in the water for more than 10 minutes without a wrap round from a tinca.

So as to make sure it was not a one off and I'd just landed on some hungry fish I tried it again a few more times and had tench, and a number of them, everywhere it went in.

Jungle is Pallatrax's nutty bait - available in boilie, stick and paste form...

(no doubt some will see this as a cynical marketing post, however, I/WE don't operate like that...)

Patrick, sounds interesting, maybe you could send me some freebies to have a play with ;) Some may see this as cynical poncing, and they'd be right :)

Darryl,

Sorry, i missed a 3. They are the new 60333NPBLN barbed eyed specialist long point. Having looked a bit closer at them, I'm not sure if they are the hooks that Chris T is talking about or not. I'll give em a try anyway.:D

When I used to fish Bradleys lake in the Cotswolds waterpark, still do actually,I remember a session where we detained a few in a keepnet for a few pics and to stop them swimming back and telling there mates.

Interestingly we were feeding, hemp, corn, maggots and pellets and boilies( Dynamite Source and Tiger Nut 10mm shelfies)

Guess what the keepnet was full of ?

Digested and part digested Tiger Nut Boilies !,not a source or remains of in sight.

And as the Pallatrax Jungle are very similar, and also devastating on Carp they are well worth a go.They also are very natural with lovely smell even after being in the water for hours.

Take this as a plug if you like ,as no doubt folk will say it is,but just passing on my experiences.

Paddy, Which do you break up, the boilies or the sticks or is there a base mix.

Do you use any PVA bags or sticks in addition or simply put some loosefeed out?

pm if prefered.

Graham

Like Mr Berry, I shall be attempting to rise with the lark to accompany Mr Law on some of his early walks. The fish are there and feeding, only problem is the Adams carcass is in the land of nod. Double red maggots at dawn anyone?
Phil

Graham,
Tend to break up the boilies for use in method mix and pva bags and then fish a bit of the stick on the hair. Using the stick as 'hookbait' can allow you to create smaller and also irregular shape bait making ejection harder. Little bit of paste round the stick to allow greater flavour leak off....

They also do a glug which is very good and the jungle spray can be used on maggots, corn, bread etc to great effect.

Simon,
PM your address and I'll get a bit to you you poncer :D;)

Ahh I cannot possibly imagine why a thread about Tench fishing is quite so appealing on a day when I walked to work in driving sleet cos the tube was knackered

I have big plans for some Tenching this year - an occasional trip on the '60 acre' with some of the other WBC but mostly on a small few acre pool where I had a few good tench in July & August last year mostly on maggots or rubber maggots with a tiny dash of flavour and some Talin to sweeten them. I was chasing a real giant I saw a couple of times but i only managed to catch some of his 'bodyguards'.

This year I hope to meet the giant or even some of his mates pre-spawning.
These were my best two from last season:
