Tench 2022

IMG_20220801_131326_091.jpg

Got my Tench head on again after nearly two months. Just returned from an eight hour stint at my local pit. Two Tench, 5lb 13oz and a feisty 3-10. The weed was murder for about fifteen yards from the bank and had to keep ‘em moving thru’ it. I’m tempted to spend some time clearing a channel but Sod’s law says that although the fishery is not being fished heavily ‘cos of the weed if I undertake to clear a path I won’t get back in the swim again. Going to give another part of the lake a go next trip. Only three tinca’s away from a personal goal. I would like to tick that box if possible before getting my Barbel head on proper for the autumn.

Returned to the pit yesterday morning. Fished an area that produced well for me in the spring of 2021 about 200 yards from where I was on Tuesday. Spent a fair time with a casting rake clearing weed and also feature finding with a newly acquired Deeper Pro + but alas no Tench were forthcoming. I did however suffer the worst “midge” bites I’ve ever had, little blighters actually drew blood and I’m suffering a bit this morning. I’ve always been lucky in the past and didn’t suffer from bites but I obviously do now, perhaps my body chemistry has changed or something like that. Can’t get out now ‘till next Thursday earliest, car service and MOT on Tuesday and a visit to the Quacks for a vitimin B12 jab on Wednesday. Taking my youngest son and middle grandson next Friday so perhaps a couple more opportunities to get that personal goal. I keep asking myself WHY I didn’t carry on chasing the Tench after the fish-ins I attended in June 🤷🏻‍♂️……If I can get my goal I can then start looking at a few river trips now that fuel prices have come back down!

I see you have a Tenchfishers badge on your hat Ady, are you planning a trip down for the AGM in November by chance ?
I'm a lapsed member Bill. I think you've inspired me to rejoin if the membership criteria hasn't changed. It was such a good, quality magazine, although I didn't really socialise with the group. They seem to have a good proactive group membership. When is the AGM because my work rota can scupper any plans?

Just a case of signing up Ady. No membership requirements. I joined this time last year just in time for autumn magazine which as you say is quality. Membership becomes renewable 1st June next year but you’ll get the spring mag before then as well. I went to the Sping General Meeting back in April and was made to feel very welcome, I’ve also attended three of the fish-ins which gave me the chance to fish waters that I wouldn’t have otherwise got to fish. I didn’t get to the Yorkshire one I’m afraid.
The AGM is 5th November at Bletchley near Milton Keynes and if you get there would love the chance to say hello 👍
I’ve attached the joining page from the new website for you to take a butchers at.

Thanks for going to that trouble Bill. I'll rejoin on my return from holiday? I got the impression that they were all a good group of fellas.

I’ve been on the pit since 7am and with no activity I started a slow pack up at 2pm, at 2-10 the right hand rod absolutely shot off and I had the first of two 6lbers in a 60minute flurry of activity. I’m now, at nearly 5pm, starting my second pack up of the day, I’m being greedy by hanging it out as I want one more fish to achieve my personal goal. Back tomorrow with son and grandson but will be in another area of the fishery so as sprog can float fish for roach and perch. I might get my goal in next half hour or perhaps tomorrow for young Stan to see, if not will be back Monday.

The wait goes on. Fished with #2 son and middle grandson. An active first couple of hours with two bream, 9-02, 8-14 and a seven pound common carp. My occasional angler son Ian who had only ever caught two Tench before today has now caught three and all over six pounds 😱 and then nothing! Our area totally switched off. Grandson Stan merrily caught Perch after Perch on a three metre whip and white maggots which gave me great pleasure in it’s self. Not going to be beaten, back Monday although the weather forecast is not great but got to be done.

At the risk of boring you all, in the words of Diana Ross….”I’m still waiting”… fished 7am thru’ to 4pm. Two carp, one a double and a cut off in weed on another run and that was extent of today’s activity. Not really sure if I’m going to tick this goal, I’m busy rest of this week, going carp fishing (sorry for bad language) with #2 son at weekend and my first trip to the Trent next Tuesday for a couple of days. I’m not going pull a blanket over this years Tenching completely yet but not sure when I’ll be able to get back on the pit. Watch this space.

I've been waiting 19 years for my tench Bill😂

It’s a bugger this waiting game Graham isn’t it. I’m hoping for one fish to achieve a total caught for this season but if I have to wait nineteen years for a new PB…I’ll never see it 😱. I know I shouldn’t get hung up on numbers and if this season/year ends as it is I won’t loose sleep over it as it’s been beyond my wildest dreams as it stands…..but !! 🤣

I am trying a new water and not sure exactly what it holds apart from tench.
If using prawns as a bait for a tench ,,,or maybe perch I wondered if there is favourite,,, fresh uncooked shell on, fresh peeled uncooked, cooked pink peeled ones or does it really not matter ?
Can small shrimps work ?
I will be drop shotting for perch soon but wondered what is considered best static bait ,on the bottom that anyone may have tried occasionally for a tench.

Mark,
A mate has caught lots of Tench using peeled “pink” prawns, me I am a cockle man. Not pickled of course but like you would get from a sea food stall. I’ve a local fishmonger that sells them in 1kg bags (frozen) and have a bag in my bait freezer. I love the idea of small shrimps and would say if you’ve got a local supply give ‘em a go….just got to catch ! I steer clear of anything “pickled” but would love to hear if anyone has had success with pickled baits. It won’t take away my aversion but would like to know out of curiosity.
Happy Tincaing Mark.
Regards
Bill
