Sub £150 barbel rod

I bought 3 Infinity's a while back for around £120 each brand new, 2 for a friend and one for me. I personally would have one over these than a Torrix 2lb/1.75lb, my reasons. the blank is superb, a great action with some more power in the butt over a Torrix, the rings on the Infinity are imo the best I have seen on any off the shelf rod, the armlock cork butt works a treat and better than the standard round section etc. I have had a Torrix 1.75 and a 2 lb but I sold them on as they just didnt feel right in use, it smay sound daft but they were far too springy, if you get my drift.

Just my opinion and I hope I dont upset any Torrix users, its just me, they dont suit me.

Hi Luke, Well i have tried them all, got 34 Barbel rods now, If Your looking for a good rod under £150, have a look at the Greys VX Barbel rod 1.75TC, 12feet
made for catching big Barbel its well Balanced and very light, you can pick them up at the moment for £128, i have had some very good fish on this rod and it handled them well.

Regards Ray

Shimano Beastmaster is gettable for under £150 good blank that ;) if you can stretch to it then the Daiwa Infinity is about the best off the peg rod you will find.

You can't go wrong with the Infinity Barbel rods ;), i brought a pair at the start of the season, lovely action under pressure :D:D

If i hadn't brought them then,i would do now seeing those prices in Chris's link

Bargain

Slightly off topic, but I'm glad that someone agrees with me about the Torrix ! The 'Springy-ness' made them feel undergunned to me ! I like a rod that BENDS !
For under 150 quid ? The best you will find would be a 2nd hand (or 2 if you are lucky) of the ORIGINAL Drennan Power Barbel rods (the ones with 2 tips). The 2lb top is completely bullet proof ! Really regret selling mine ! My I-Powers are far superior, but for 'wanging' out big leads/feeders and general abuse, the Drennans were perfect !

I had a rod made for me by Dave Lumb a couple of seasons ago for a little more than you budget................. drop him a line he may be able to help you.

Hi Luke

Long time no speak. I love my old Greys Prodigy, decent amount of power with a very forgiving tip. Very, very rarely suffer hook pulls with it, so it suits my style of using smaller hooks than many others. Given that I really bully my fish too, i'd be nervous swapping. However, I don't catch as many lumps as you so maybe what's right for me won't be for you.

I guess looking at the various suggestions, this is the key point. See if anyone will let you borrow a model that you're thinking of buying and see what you think.

Finally, not sure what he does them for now, but I've heard very good things about Andy Sliwa's custom built rods. Not sure on the blank and I know they are a bit on the short side for some but may be worth a chat with him.

M

Ps. Having checked, the details are here. It appears he now makes three models. https://sites.google.com/site/caneandcarbon/carbon

I'd hardly call the torrix a poker !

Mine is a very soft tip but I can give the fish the butt if I need to ?

Don't know which blanks you have played with mate ?

I had two 12ft 1.75lb torrix, and sold them to Paul M; they were far to tippy and i was glad Paul wanted them. However, i now have a 11ft 2lb torrix and i would say it's a poker, I should have got the 1.75tc 11ft, which feels spot-on. Recently got hold of a couple of Daiwa AKN116 and had them rebuilt, yet to give them a work out on a decent angry fish, but they feel and look lovely.

What rod suits one angler may not suit another, even if the intended use is identical. It has to be a 'horses for courses' scenario, thus no opinions are invalid...even if we don't agree.

I bought a Normark Nirvana Big Barbel/Small Carp from Ebay about 3 yrs ago for 30 quid, liked it and swapped a Shimano rod for another Normark (similar cost). Didn't like the handles so paid for full corks on both (£190) and love them even more. I know others would say I'm a fool (more fool they), but I'm happy :)

Sorry to digress.....

torrix 11' 1.75lb has a much more give in it than the 12' version, both nice rods but i prefer the action of the 11', but I still prefer my i-powers to both. Dont see many i-powers for sale though.
