Spawning time.

After a visit to my friend in the black Country and a night of the gorgeous bathams ale, I journeyed back via Worcester and stopped by Powick old bridge for a gander. Plenty of huge chub cruising in the upper layers. But what was fantastic to see was the barbel spawning like mad in the shallower section over the gravel. I counted about 12-16 but to be honest they were going at it like mad so I could have double counted. What else I noticed is the large amount of silvers there was.
Absolutely amazing to watch, such a privilege to watch nature at its best.

Gutting that is, if it wasn't for this stupid close season you could have crashed a feeder amongst them! ;)

So they are still in there, unless of course they are Severn tourists, which I imagine is what they are.

Hiya, Jeff.

If you've got a spare 2 minutes please add it to the spawning survey that the barbel society are running. It'll help protect these areas in the long run and of course the close season itself. April and May seem to be the most regular up and down the country based on reports with second spawnings later on if the temps allow.

The Barbel Society – Spawning Survey

Unfortunately a woman reported on the local radio last week that she had stood on Powick Bridge and watched the seal (which has been given a name) swimming in the Teme.

The Barbel Society – Spawning Survey

That's interesting Bobby, I thought with gravels shifting in winter and different levels the sites would change on a yearly basis.

How does anyone get to see the results and the compiled data of this survey Bobby?

Ade, I will find out through the Society what the intended form of reporting will be in relation to survey results. It's obviously important that we can all benefit from seeing the results of the collected data (and it will have more meaning over time and with consistent survey data provided by as many people as possible).

Hiya Ade,

The reports are not published, although they are shared with the EA and university. If anyone has any interest in seeing them then contact the society, Pete Reading is probably best.......still quite limited on returns so please share link amongst friends and spread the word. We all benefit massively from this.

Bobby, so you want me to give my time and participate in something I, as a multispecies angler will get no direct benefit from. Personally I think I will let this generous offer pass through my grasp.

Very helpful.

Bobby I filled out as much information as possible this morning.

What sort of direct benefit were your expecting Ade? There might of course be the benefit of knowing that you are contributing data that, when taken together with the data kindly provided by other anglers generous with their time, may just help to provide a clearer picture of barbel recruitment factors. Ultimately this should help to creat a register and I am confident that it would form the basis of reports that would be shared with anglers.

But I see where you are coming from Ade. I saw an old lady struggling to carry her shopping to her car. I thought about helping her but then, like you, wondered what on earth was in it for me. I mean, I had a cold beer waiting for me in the pub.

I see you joined the forum back in 2010. This really has been a long build up to posting. Actually, you remind me of another Ade that used to post on here.
