Spawning time.

I think you're reading that in the wrong context Graham. Read it with a smile on your face and it completely changes. Perhaps I should've put a smiley face in there somewhere thinking about it :D
If you read it through again you'll see that I completely agree and understand the other side of view. Maybe I should have written it as "indeed Neil, goes without saying. Always nice to encourage the others who are willing though".....Shall we get back on topic now or are we going to have to go through every sentence with a fine-toothed comb?...Personally I think the benefits are quite obvious but due to the reasons listed above I can see why people wouldn't want to engage in the spawning survey. Hopefully those views will change in time or be the concerns of the minority. Right, I'm off.

That's the trouble with humour on here or any other place Bobby, very difficult to convey feelings or intentions, yes back on topic would be best.

Generally Graham if someone puts a :D it generally means that its tongue in cheek. I wasn't sarcastic at all. Theres an option on here to block posters that you don't agree with. Ask a moderator for any help required.
:D:)

I give back by doing my level 3 coaching certificate and helping the sport by helping youngsters. I try desperately to keep them away from single species zealots promoting there own favoured species. Cue Danny Fairbrass vid about fallow lakes, otters and nuisance species. Or someone using the "evidence gained" by pressurising the EA into maintaining an artificially stocked species.

No you were not Jeff, you did say that a post containing uncalled for sarcasm was "a great post", that is what I criticised.:D:D:D

Thanks for the invaluable information you have imparted to me, so much to learn isn't there? :D:D:D

Why block posters that one doesn't agree with? isn't the point that not everyone agrees, no point at all and nothing learned if one only converses with others that one agrees with :D:D:D

Very difficult to accurately gather information about a creature that lives in an environment where they are mostly free to move in that environment, having said that I see no harm in collecting the information and who knows once a few years have been collected there may be some information that is of use, on the other hand it may not who knows? at the moment I cant see what use it will be but as I said I am always open to being persuaded.

As for what data I think would be valuable, difficult one to answer, perhaps dye marking/tagging of fish with different colours used for fish from different parts of the river, this could (not saying it would) identify whether fish keep to their own group or mix with others to widen the gene pool, do fish need to do this as mammals do?

As for some posts being seen as pulling an idea to pieces saying why it wont work, it will always happen although some posts asking questions are not done to pull things apart merely to find more out. I have no doubt that the suggestion I made above can be questioned but that's life, we all have different views at times.

Thanks Graham and these are interesting thoughts that I will pass on to Pete.

Sarcastic ****

Never been four star before thanks, sarcasm was a joke Jeff.:D:D:D

Been looking at the form for reporting any spawning activity, at the top of the form it mentions that historical evidence is allowed, isn't this likely to have an unbalancing effect on the data depending on how far back the historical evidence was from? (not a criticism just an observation)

I have reported some historical evidence.

Funny how Ade joined in 2010. About the same time Richard Hamlyn/ Paul Boote/ Chris Avis/Paul Bassinder registered too:)

Uncanny similarity in contentious posts as well....

Alex if you see declining to take part in a survey is contentious I think we have a very different understanding of the world.
I joined in 2010 so full marks for observation, my twin brother joined at that time as we'll, I doubt he will ever post, he loves his fishing but cannot stand petty politics at any price.
Someone called me Adrian further back in this thread or maybe I dreamt it, my name is Aiden just to make things nice and confusing my brother is named Adrian, a very strange sense of humour runs through our family, we are identical. I adopted Ade at school to make things more confusing for all concerned. I have actually met Richard Hamlyn, he is a bit of an amateur thespian, I have never met Avis or Bassinder but I have a book by Paul Boote seen his slide show and spoke to the man, I used to read his stuff on here and until the end of his BFW days thought him funny. I can assure you they are not the same person.

Could someone set up a poll (I don't know how to) on this thread to gauge BFW members' response to the request to share detailed information about barbel spawning sites in the associated survey by the Barbel Society? I think it would be interesting to assess the likely level of participation because if this reflects barbel fishers as a whole, it would give us a much clearer picture of any conclusions based upon such data. I know where my money lies in relation to the probable 'yes/no/undecided' responses.

But to be fair all any self respecting Barbel angler needs to do is walk a suitable looking river pop on a pair of Polaroids and all becomes clear or not. What I would love to know is the movements of Barbel, not necessary where they spawn, because spawning areas must be pretty well known, I would be in favour of some sharing of identifying fish, especially on the larger Rivers such as the Severn, and as to where these fish disappear too, as they did last summer.

Of course every Barbel has a unique 'finger print' of sorts, especially with the black dots, just how this would be compiled I don't know, but would be keen to help. Given of course that I actually can submit data :)

This has been running for a number of years now and I submitted data whilst I was a member. The initial intention I believe was to publish something in the future for all.

Not sure if the same applies but if so and confirmed the contribution levels will rise significantly.

Now Pete Reading is controlling most of the BS actions and got rid of the problems on the committe its a good time to support them

Graham

When the results are in I'd like a copy please, it would improve my early season success 10 fold, I'll send the stamps now, I like to pay my way.

I'm waiting for those in the know in the B.S to be holding up some clonkers early season next year in all the rags and reading about their approach and skill at catching them, we will all benefit from it I agree.

;)

Hiya Dazza.

You mean people look at pictures of things like river records in the rags on rivers like the dove and goyt etc and go and look for the actual swim they were caught from??

And try and catch the same fish again to become "famous"

Well I never. Bad show.

Smiley. Graham.

It would be good to have a sticky pinned up on here, with reports from bfw members posting up any spawning rituals going on, on their local waters.

It's been 5 seasons since I have spotted any number of barbel spawning on the Gt Ouse, but I've been given hope from a posting on here.

Only just seen this. Apologies for my mistake Ade, some people have been posting under many different identities. I agree you actually said nothing contentious but had it been one of the other characters it would have been intended as such! I guess they still manage to stir things up even in their absence :( I'll be more careful in future :)
