Sea Bass

Hi all

Apologies for asking a few of the same questions as last year (I never managed a trip for Bass in the end), but I was wondering if anyone can give me any pointers. bear in mind I will be fishing from the shore.

Firstly, when lure fishing, is there a minimum rod length that is suitable? Secondly, when using braid mainline, do you fish it straight through?
Thirdly, are there any tips people can give me for retrieving the lure and types of spots to try? Rocks, open sand?

Lastly (for now), someone else mentioned the Isle Of Wight but got no response. Does anyone know of any good spots around Shanklin during the summer or a decent tackle shop to ask?

Cheers
Martin

Martin,
You can get Bass from most beaches on the island, and some very big. Try Scotties in Newport for tackle.

Thanks chaps

Shaun, for what reason do you use the fluoro? Visibility? Abrasion resistance? Do you use standard mainline/hooklink fluoro or something more specialist? I have some stiff Seaguar fluoro that I believe some people use instead of wire trace.

Hi Martin
I use the flurocarbon because of visibilty. However the braid is joined to the fluro by a swivel, and I think it helps with tangles and kinking, both non existent for me. The fluro I use is some Japenese stuff called teklon, 13lb. Bought it at a car boot sale, use it for my combi rig when barbel fishing, Never let me down, nice to fish with.

Seen on a U.S. site - an 82-pound record Striped bass caught the other week on the American East Coast. If only....

and here is the bass i promised in the previous post...sorry bout the rubbish quality photo...and the MEGA secrecy...can't be too carefull...especially when netsmen keep their ears so close to the ground.

Scales went 9lb 13oz, however i am going to check them in the morning because i think it is considerably larger than that.

Scales were correct...irritatingly.

It's Mudeford Julian. Last season a 13lb 2oz bass came from the Run on a crab line!

With all the kids fishing shoulder to shoulder on the railings for crabs and then keeping their catch in buckets on a hot summers day the mortality rate is pretty high. At the end of the day they all tip them back in over the side resulting in a crabfest for the bass right under anglers rod tips. Sport can be excellent for bass on occasions but mostly it's with checkers with the odd big fish thrown in.

It still goes on! I have family photos - first in Brownie black-and-white, then Instamatic colour, then Voigtlander 35mm Agfa and Kodakchrome slide, taken an age ago of little me at Mudeford, first with a handline and resulting crabs in bucket-and-spade bucket, then with a rod and with a flounder, then eventually with a prized schoolie bass or two. Happy days.

Here's a nice fish taken at dawn this morning 'off the top' with a lucky craft sammy (where do they dream these names up?)

6lb 13oz

yes...I am aware that my toe nails need a clip!

Cracking fish, I think the people who name a lot of lures are on acid.
I lost a Megabass Zonk a few weeks ago, 2nd cast. Expensive bad luck!
Prefer to fly fish, however the wind does sometimes make it impossible.
Flies are fairly cheap to make ( yorkshire bred);)
Good luck with the Bassin.....

Was shown a picture of a 15lb 2oz monster from Christchurch harbour taken last week on a livebait. Fantastic specimen that went back ok after a lengthy recovery.

Full credit to the captor who doesn't want to publicise any more than I've posted.

Awesome fish.

Well done that man! fantastic fish and very refreshing to hear it was returned alive.Too many bass are only looked on as a way of making some money.

Yes. Though not a violent type myself, I believe I could, however, make an exception when faced with the worst of today's killers of bass, sea-trout and salmon, whether semi-commercial or just plain freezer-filling greedy, then find myself detained At Her Majesty's Pleasure for helping them "on their way".

Hi chaps

Thanks for the advice earlier in the thread. Just returned from my family trip to Shanklin. Took along my 6'6" jig rod and a few lures that I picked up specifically for the bass. Managed a few hours fishing off Horse Ledge over the week.

After struggling on the bass front I had an hour or so float fishing for Ballan Wrasse on Tuesday. I managed my first ever and at around 3lb I was well chuffed.

Tried for both the Bass and Wrasse again on Wednesday and Friday. Drew a blank on Weds but managed my first ever Bass of between 2-3lb on Friday. They really are a beautiful fish and I was chuffed to bits.
