Nearly that time of year again guys,
My waders are patched, braid is replaced, reels cleaned, new lures bought....bank account emptied.
Just a few more weeks and it will all be worthwhile!
For all those bass enthusiasts I hope to see a stream of that most photagenic of fish (and fishing) on here, and hopefully a couple of trophy shots from me aswell!

(hope to spoil you all with some shots of BIG giltheads aswell...with some luck)

Lures at the ready...unfortunately for me it takes them a bit longer to get up here...May time, but they are there!!

I actually tried for them at he weekend with the sun warming me up...no luck - but here's a few memories from last year just to get you interested...!!

Daiwa salt pro minnow in lazer green shiner took a beautifull brace of fish at 7lb 2oz and 6lb 5oz, not to mention probably over twenty fish between 2 and 4lb. They are the best lure I have ever used i think, cast miles and are ultra stable even in heavy seas, never been one for the £20+ lures. Have daiwa salt pros in basically all the colours (except the blue ones as i think blue is a pants bass colour), and also have daiwa chugger minnows in basically all the colours, love rapalas also x-rap and maxrap in AYU.

Here is a the 6lb 5oz (believe it or not...**** photo of a mobile that doesn't do it justice) although it is the dreaded kitchen shot (I am not afraid to take the odd one for the table, this one infact didn't revive) I normalt encourage a catch photo and release scheme (95% of the time anyway!)

Oh, and even though my avatar says bath, i infact now live in Cornwall (for the time being anyway).

You lads have whetted my appitite to have a go for Bass this year with lures...Can you give me a bit of guidence...what strength of braid do you use and are we talking rock fishing or harbour and estuary ?...The rod I would use is an old Conoflex 11 ft 2lb TC Carp Rod from the early eighties...It's got quite a steely action but has handled Carp to over 30lb so I'm confident of it's casting ability...I'm thinking of fishing Thames/Medway Estuary, Kent and Sussex coast areas....Any tips appreciated.

I can't offer any advice about lure fishing but one tip I can suggest is this. On the highest tides, if the mackerel are in, freeline a fresh mackerel head with the guts hanging out. This isn't a manic fishing method but it does sort out some whoppers! Treat it like pike fishing with an open spool and the line lightly clipped-up. Then, if you get a take wind down hard and strike. I'll certainly be bass fishing as often as possible this summer, though I'm intending to be fishing in Belize this September during the time I'd usually be bass fishing here.

Yeah storm thunderstick...if you looking for an affordable lure this is an excellent choice. However, i'm daft and am now spending £10 for each lure i get...maria chase / yo zuri crystal minnow etc. I'm sure these lures catch the fisherman more than the fish!

me too mate, i have those maria lures (anglekiss and chase BW) will give them a bash this year. Got to say i really don't like the action on the yo-zuris, and find they cast pants, all mine have been transfered to the doom box and will be given to friends.

to bill, I recommend powerpro in 20 or 30lb, I will fish rock, beach, estuary, anywhere i think has a chance of turning up a whopper. If you are fishing estuaries look for features like underwater spits/bars (anywhere with a sudden change of depth) that get a good amount of tide running over them, also look for rips, fish shallower areas/creeks at dawn on still warm mornings.
If open coast i prefer shallow reefy areas exposed to constant swell, with deeper holes in amoungst, or rock/reef at the edge of beaches with plenty of gullies. Where ever is going to hold lots of gobies/crabs/shrimp/or areas where bait fish are likely to be washed into regulaly...beaches known to contain lots of sandeel etc. Never rule out metals and soft plastics either.

I would highly recommend the Daiwa Saltiga Minnow for incredible casting and great, shallow action...

A lot of people have recommended me that lure recently...will have to pick one up, my local shop stocks them at a good price i think. apparently they cast better than the rapala maxrap 13, i have just taken delivery of the 15 size which is 1/4oz heavier though.

Belated thanks to you all for the info and tips on this thread....I'm now looking at buying a couple of the recommended lures...

been out a couple of times, no joy yet, didn't expect any in all honesty, just too early, but couldn't stand the wait any longer.

Ive been out for a couple of hours, didnt expect to catch but was just nice to be there..:)..I think this weekend just might have a chance of producing.:)

Nice one George, takes them a few more weeks to get up here in any numbers!
