rivermonsters again

I cant believe that people actually like this programme. Dont know how he manages to keep a straight face talking about fish dragging people away to there deaths, and it always ends up being a pirhana, a stingray or a catfish,
utter nonsense.

True enough Ray....and I cringe at the multiple comments, like 'Fish on, fish on, fish on'....followed by 'Big fish, big fish, big fish' :D

Mind you, he is probably making a fortune out of this, so we can hardly blame him for hamming it up a bit to raise the excitement levels in Joe public I suppose. I could see myself being persuaded by the director to do the same, for what he is undoubtedly being paid :p

Cheers, Dave.

You could start by catching the Beast of batchworth.

I watched the 'how it was filmed episode' the other week (on the Shed(?)) and as I've never watched many of the programmes, it was really interesting!I do agree with the comments above about repetition, recaps and the 'over-the-top' commentary, but I'd love to know what someone from a non-angling backgound thinks about it (and not someone like Stuart's wife, who probably has had countless fishy tales related to her over the years :D).

Many of my non-angling colleagues have commented that they watch and very much enjoy it. Can't be a bad thing. At least he puts his catches back, prior to this programme being aired I'm sure we've all been met with a shake of the head and a "what's the point in that then?" comment when telling friends that we do the same!

I should imagine a lot of non anglers would be scared to death of going anywhere near a bankside, he makes angling look like such a dangerous sport.

The guy is a proper fisherman. Yes he overplays things for a bit of drama but he does fish in difficult situations and he puts the hours in.

The one I saw last week he fished in the Chernobyl cooling pond. It was fascinating from a historical and environmental perspective never mind the fishing.

Anyone see the one with the plane crash?

It's very adventurous, horizon broadening fishing. And it's on telly as an antidote to Robson Green who is awful so we should all be thankful.

P.s. Yeah it's always a catfish..

About a year ago i was working in an upmarket west end hairdressers and overheard two young, model type women talking about River monsters, and how fantastic they thought the series was.Love it or hate it we have fishing on prime time telly.People other than fishermen are talking about it and loving it.And it goes a long way to make Joe public see us in a good light .Yes sometimes he repeats himself but who's perfect . He is a fisherman trying his best, and we should all appreciate it.Remember John wilson's silly laugh, it drove me mad but again he put fishing on the telly. The BBC hates us and we need to think ourselves lucky that by spinning a yarn, River monsters is the success it is. And by being popular it makes the way easier for other fishing shows in the future. .

Have to agree with MrSwaby entirely.

Cannot believe the knockers reasons other than jealousy!

Imagine a River Monsters edition featuring MrAverage sat bankside watching his tip and then when it got dark.........still watching his tip, or, running a float through a thousand times in the same swim.

It wasn't that long ago that all we had was a dire half hour; Hooked, on BBC2.

Goliath Tiger Fish anyone?

I'm not knocking the guy as such, just the programme is the same thing every episode. Certainly not jealous either, each to there own.

Give me Robson every time, now theres a guy that likes to have fun and makes fishing look like fun as well :D

I don't disagree with you on the important points Mark, but as you mentioned, John Wilson's manic laugh drove you nuts....did me, too. In fact, if a group of us were watching John on the box, and he hooked a fish, we would all shout out in unison with him "OOOh, feels like a good one" :D:D:D When you consider how many years he was involved in making footage for the TV, you would have thought a director would have told him how annoying such repetitive comments were . Having said that, we all kept on watching didn't we? And I don't think that was JUST because it was the only fishing on the box :p

'A passion for angling'....now THAT was a proper fishing programme :D Despite his slightly eccentric nature, Chris Yates was superb in that, ably abetted by Bob James. No doubt the direction and filming by the wonderful Hugh Miles was a lot to do with the perfection of those short films...but the lack of embarrassing comments did no harm, that's for sure :D

Mind you...I still watch and enjoy River Monsters and the odd Wilson repeat...and have deep respect for John Wilson and Jeremy Wade for being the innovators and superb anglers that they undoubtedly are.....just try to shut out the worst of the dialogue :D:D:D

Cheers, Dave.

Was very good tonight. Reminds me of the first 8oz+ dace I caught on a self tied black gnat from the brook.

I remember chatting to Matt at one of John's do's at Harefield Dave, may have been the opening of his new shop. He was supposed to be representing some bait company or other, but I got him on his own and told him I couldn't afford the gear he was selling....and showed him some base mix ingredients I fancied. He had a quick look around to see nobody was watching, then dipped his finger in and had a taste...then said "Use it mate, tastes sound to me, you won't go wrong with that" (or words to that effect). I have had a sneaky regard for him ever since :D

Cheers, Dave.
