River Record

A big Pinn Burbot would be nice , they are in there ....[ edited out dreadful spelling error , my old English teacher would have been most displeased ]

Steve Carden - most of that wording came from when I was working with Brian Dowling...!

Fair enough Andy but times have certainly changed! I once headed the list for a river and i think Brian took it from the Barbel Catchers list (with permission of course:)) as i certainly never publicised it.

Some time later he asked me for a photo, i duly informed him that the fish had subsequently been captured at a larger weight and gave him details of the captor. He then asked him for a picture and was told in no uncertain terms to get stuffed!:) Despite this rebuff, Brian still put it up as the new river record!

My point is, how can we have "official" records, when a good many anglers don't publicise their catches? I certainly can't recall anyone ever "claiming" a river record:rolleyes: and the lists were only ever a seen as a guide to a river's potential.

I daresay that times have changed and doubtless i'm out of touch, but i can't help wondering where such things will lead:(

Now, who's taking things too seriously?:D

Apologies to the original poster and his lad btw and no offence meant to them.

Steve,

I have to agree with you re the 'Official' list as we both know there are several of these 'records' that are out of date, mainly due to the fact that not everyone publicises their catches and have no wish to make them known for various reasons.

I agree they give an idea of the size that Barbel will grow to in some rivers but unless they are deemed to be ratified under certain conditions by an accepted body how can we be certain that any fish is a 'record'.

Again this does not detract from the capture of any fish, as each is individual to it's captor and should be celebrated as such and by the merits of it's capture.

Steve as you say, where does this all lead us? I wonder....

Sumo, don't be disheartened by the cruel words of Big John E. You are as in touch with the 21st century as I am.

Must dash, Z Cars is on soon and I'd planned to nip out for a Double Diamond first.

regards as ever,

Jon

p.s. any news on the original topic? Have to say I'm curious.

Well the Wye record is being beaten weekly at the mo, heres a 15lb 7 oz caught last week:D:rolleyes::eek:

I can confirm that there's now a new River Ure record at 11lb 10oz. I'll be updating the list later today.

There's another claim pending at the moment for the Thame...

Cheers,

Andy F

Are you sure that Wye one is not 7lb 15oz!

Did a bit of lightening the photo up - looks a very long fish with a huge tail. He's not holding it miles away from his body either. I'd say a double but nowhere near the claim. Perhaps 10/11ish?
