Retro baits

I've thought about baitworks in the past. A bit to big and commercialised for me now though I think 🤔 although it's still a possibility. The Atlantic heat sounds right up my street. But what are the actual levels of fishmeals in there? Not so sure if I trust these bigger companies.
I wouldn't have any doubts about the quality of the baits produced by Baitworks. They don't cut corners.

Thanks for that chaps, let's see if it's matured with age or gone rancid. Presumably had powdered egg added. Certainly worked well. Instant bait.

Hi men,

As he only sells direct to customers, not through shops the baits are competitive, and every batch , and iv had a few, are identical . He makes a point of the leakage and how the baits release the good stuff , and the breakdown 😉.Look online at reviews on them , my fav is monster red , look on his site at the profile 👍. The liquids and other attractors are worth looking at , and my popups are in 2 sealed bags and a container , scent from hell 😳😁 , banned from the house 😁

Baitworks are not a big out of touch company, they are a relatively small outfit that produce some quality baits. I hope to visit them this Thursday,if you want any specific questions asked or samples let me know.

I really rate those scent from hell pop ups for carp, perfect for the silty waters I fish. And yes its best not to keep them in the house! And always use rubber gloves when using the booster liquid...🤢

Hi men ,

Joe , caught loads on the pineaphell waters as well 👍 . Thought it was a bit of an obvious combo , but the carp really love them 👍

When I saw the title of this thread , I thought , this will be interesting ,''retro baits '' present day anglers using old school barbel baits like bullocks pith , greaves , worms , cheesepaste ,but no ,it's about making your own boilies ! Boilies in my book are hardly retro , I am presuming the retro element refers to making your own bait rather than buying it ready made as it were ..

Talking retro baits , has anyone ever tried mealworms as bait ? They look fairly maggoty but appear larger ,got to be worth a shot . Looking on the internet you can buy them live delivered to your door

'Retro Baits' is the name of the company Connor got his bait from, that is about to cease trading.

Sorry Mike, retro baits was the name of the company I was using for boilies. We all have our favourite ways of catching barbel, some people like to roll meat whilst some people like to fish static. Others like to use the older baits you mentioned and fish pins whilst others use fixed spools and prefer the boilie and pellet approach. Personally I don't think there's a right way or wrong way and as long as we do what makes us happy then that's the main thing. I prefer to use a boilie. I just think it's more of a nutritious meal for them and sort of feel like I'm giving something back to the barbel. It also helps me avoid other species I'm not targeting. I do occasionally use a worm, casters or meat myself though. 👍

Any one tried the bait from the hookbait company? I heard they are good but never tried myself. thanks
Seen them but never used them. They do seem a good company but there's a lot of options to pick from in the range. Makes me sort of think how come there not mixing all these ingredients together and making a smaller range of superior boilies instead of a list of ones with separate attractors.

Thanks Neil. A good friend of mine uses them for his Carp fishing. I'd say there a fairly big company though. Well known in the carp world and well advertised in magazines. I could possibly end up using them though. The Atlantic heat would be my choice.

Each to there own Connor .and as you say there is no right or wrong way . Barbel have very catholic tastes ,and if they are in the mood they will eat virtually anything , I think its more about what gives the angler confidence . I am a big flavoured spam fan myself , sure it keeps Barbel in tip top condition , very nutritous ,not ....

@Mike Hodgkiss 100%, I think I mentioned at the start of the post they'll eat anything but it's a confidence thing on my half. Like I'm a big fan of using a big lump of meat in the edge or fairly close in, where as I haven't got the confidence to give it a chuck out incase it comes off the hook. Hmm I'd say it might not be very nutritious for us but for a barbel it would have quite a lot of fat and protein in there which would be used for energy.

Seafood blend was in the first list of baits Rod started selling from his garage in the early eighties , apparently it was ground up Purina cat foI

I bought one of his one piece waterproof suits in the late 80s. It was a motorbiking waterproof...still had the original label in it, he didn't even re badge them.

Where does this barbel eat anything bollox come from they are a cyprinoid there’s certain times and conditions for different baits it’s not about them eating anything it’s about inducing them to feed with a good quality bait not kilos of pellets full of oil ( bloody things should be banned ) and I’ve never seen a barbel eat a rusty bike frame 😉😉
