Ray Walton Rolling ‘ pin’

I've been using Rolling Pins for the last 5yrs or so (but just sold 2 of them). For me they come into their own when using the method they were designed for i.e. rolling meat. Re. line loading : for rolling meat I load 40m of a cheap strong braid as backing, followed by 60m of PP Slick 8. When paired with a Torrix 11ft/1.75, a medium sized lump of meat on a lightly leaded hook can be cast 30m with an underhand flick, with ease. This rod/reel combination is sheer joy to use.
N.b.. the more you load a Rolling Pin with braid, the more likely you are to get wind knots (especially if you haven't learned how to 'feather' down).

First cast with the new ‘ Pin at 5.45 am and ten mins later I was into my first Wharfe double at 10 lbs 4 oz

To say I am delighted is an understatement.

So far so good 😋 The reel behaved impeccably .

Thanks for that ,

Seems that J W Young have managed to turn a good looking reel into an ugly skeleton , that would never ever grace my collection…
My suspicions were confirmed, it could be that my wife managed to source the last available new pin of the previous design.
I cannot see why Youngs needed to drill holes and cut away so much material as the previous reel is not heavy anyway.

I couldn't agree more David, the original pin is nice looking and is fairly lightweight, I was hoping that they will improve the turning mechanism not the weight. But on the other hand, since this pin is for rolling meat, and you need to hold the rod all day long, maybe a lighter pin is welcome by others.

It's not necessarily for rolling meat - it's just a side caster, of which there are a few models from various manufacturers. You can roll meat with any 'pin or a fixed spool just as effectively, assuming one can Wallis cast. IMO just a marketing gimmick to get another reel off the production line and keep the JW Young name going strong.
