Predation Action Group

I think the best we can all agree on, is that they stop the release of any more otters, at least to see how things balance out.

Spot on Swiss. The problem will be stopping the groups who have been releasing them carrying on as before. They've been getting away with it for this long and appear to have done so completely "under the radar".

Have you guys seen the article in the angling times about Vic Simpson wildlife vet who now believes that otter in the south west are at saturation point and whats to move excess otters to the south east where there not many otters , what a joke , would the farmers move livestock when there was foot and mouth!

i can see a rampage of mums running down the river bank after anglers, frying pan held high...not!

i was speaking metaphorically, i cannot see it raised in question time, any of this.

interesting article by Pete reading in Junes CAT mag about barbel, or the lack of them.

he basically talks about why on some rivers barbel are in decline, he talks about otters, fry,and floods, nice article, try and look for the mag.

Its an interesting article by Pete Reading that goes along the lines of saying otters aren't the main problem. The point he makes is that a lot of barbel are coming o the end of their lives naturally and the good year classes that made up all the big fish populations are starting to die off. It could be, but it seems odd that this is happening on so many rivers simultaneously and how does that explain the drastic reduction in chub numbers on rivers like the Cherwell and Windrush? For some reason most of the top barbel rivers decline seemed to become apparent straight after the 2007 floods. There must be a link somewhere but I cannot begin to speculate what it is.
