Power Shot G6 problems and possible replacement?

Thanks for all your replies folks. Sorry I kinda ducked out of the discussion but I have been swamped in a stew of trying to teach myself how to use Photoshop and learning how to create a new website at the same time. Anyway, I've taken everyone's comments on board and now feel suitably informed to start shopping around for a new camera...... Now all I need is a few quid to spare!
 
Take a look at this one Chris....swivel screen, built like a tank and highly rated. They only start out at around £290 new, so unless the much vaunted 'ebay madness' takes a grip, this should come up cheaper than a G12.

I haven't had time to check if it comes with a remote....hope it does. Google 'Trusted reviews' for more info...these are a direct competitor of the G12.

Have a look at a sony HX9VB.
Fairly compact, wide angle and 16 x zoom. Fantastic quality video, you can zoom while filming.
No remote or swivel screen but has a smile function, just set it to burst and smile at the camera. ten shots which on wide angle you can crop the image to get a great shot. love mine.
