Third blank in a row this week on three different rivers. But at least yesterday I stayed dry.

I needed a replacement for my recently broken telescopic pike rod. Took a punt on a heavily discounted Preston Feeder Feeda rod as the old telescopic had been used more for barbel and carp at range in strong flows.

I was happy to be back at this productive swim, blocked to me until recently by a massive field of Japanese Knotweed. Finally it had died back and gave me the opportunity to Christen the new rod in the conditions it was designed for......

I took 5 more like this, all around 5lbs. The Lot can be great at this time of year! The rod was just right for fishing a heavy feeder and big baits at range, nice to have a 5 ozs quiver tip showing any interest as well!

What a wonderful river!

A fine day was forecast, 19c for the afternoon - in November!

I decided to explore the Lot about an hours drive upriver from where I live. Found a few attractive swims and managed one barbel from the most likely.

Barbel flow.jpg

There was little flow in the first swims I tried, RiverApp on my phone indicated the barrage at Entragues had let out water around mid-day. Question was - when would it reach me downriver?

After a couple of fishless hours at the last swim the flow rapidly increased and the river rose about 1'. That woke the fish and I had a barbel of 4.7 lb followed by a string of great bites which failed to hookup. Probably chub - frustrating!

But a lot of useful info from my days exploration. A good result!

That stretch is just downstream of St. Junien. The buildings are former tanneries and warehouses right on the town boundary. I am fortunate in that from that point the river turns and flows in a curved path meaning that any point in about 60km of river bank is within 15 minutes of home.

Thank you for your openness Clive. Itā€™s over two hours from my mates place in Champigny sur Veude. I was curious as a possible day trip location when Iā€™m staying with him but he wonā€™t want to drive that far for a day session. Will have to seek Barbel closer to Chinon.

I will PM you a couple of closer locations Bill.

It's winter and we have had snow this last couple of days, this morning it was - 5c and ice rather than frost. But the sun midday had enough strength to see it off and a drive down to the river found a couple of sun-traps for the afternoon.

Even in winter lovely Larnagol faces the sun most of the day. The boat landing area was positively warm - but I was not fishing today!

Must remember this for the next frosty day. A couple of hours after lunch should bring a barbel and be comfortable fishing!
