Petition for the abolition of the closed season on rivers

wasn't it only brought in to keep commoners off the rivers so the gentry had the rivers to themselves for the salmon and trout.

Complete and utter myth. Whilst the fluff flingers may not have been unhappy about it, the closed season was instigated by (Sheffield) coarse anglers. In a time when fish were routinely killed for match weigh ins, they realised that laying off for a couple of months, in what they best guessed to be the coarse fish spawning times, might have significant benefits for future fish populations. The notion that there is anything particularly scientific about the dates of the closed season is also a myth.

Coincidentally Chris, I was just about to mention our recent conversation and how I also believed the myth until you told me the real reason.

Saved me from doing it;)
