I disagree Neil. With back winding you are in danger of giving the fish to much lone, whereas the modern clutch keeps you in contact with the fish at all times.

The point you are making about giving too much line is one of the reasons back winding can be better, the other of course us that confidence thing, surely the senses of the human brain will be better than a mere spring tensioner?

However on the Lower Severn playing off the clutch would be a OK thing
to do, in fact probably the better option. But certainly not Rivers such as the Teme or Arrow, well as far as I understand, but I think most anglers will make the choice depending on a few factors. As you just fish only the Lwr Severn I guess it's an easy choice :)

I am not entirely sure why this should be a subject worthy of debate. Surely it's simply personal preference isn't it? Why do you feel compelled to mount a challenge Nick.

In polite society, the conversation at ones club, or even at the till in pound stretcher should be:

Angler 1: I bid you good day Angler 2. Now, here's the thing. When playing a fish are you minded to rely on the clutch, back wind or perhaps, a combination of the two?

Angler 2: Good day to you too Angler 1. What a tremendous question that is. I have always found back winding very effective but from time to time, I have in fact relied on the clutch. This happened recently in fact when I accidentally but brutally severed two fingers when trying on a pair of gloves.

Angler 1: Thank you Angler 2. That's a comprehensive answer. I really admire your jumper.

Yet somehow, we end up with:

Aggressor 1: Hey, you, Aggressor 2. You're a tosse* you are. And another thing, clutch or back wind? Well, which is it?

Aggressor 2: I'm a total back winder. That's what real men do.

Aggressor 1: Thought so. And I bet you still live with your mum. And I bet she still nurses you doesn't she.

Aggressor 2: Yes.

We really don't need to argue about everything.

Howard I hope I bump into you next season on the Kennet. I'll make you a cuppa. Top post & Sanity!

Howard,

Priceless, just priceless :D

Cheers,

By complete coincidence, I'm talking as someone who today had an argument with someone at the till in Poundland. Police were called and the arguing continued outside. Lady was taken away by police. See that's the sort of person you're dealing with on this forum.

I simply disagreed with neil on back winding. Nothing else. Im sorry if you find my posts as arguments but if everyone had the same opinion all the time these forums would be a very dull place.

I totally agree Nick. But take a look at your post at the top of page 5 of this thread (4 April at 16.06). You can have a very healthy and interesting debate with someone without resorting to provocative language and attempts to belittle someone and their choices- especially with something as benign as back winding. Actually, you remind of someone who used to post on here. Richard Hamlyn, or was it Patrick Cooper. Do you know them?

Simple tongue in cheek humour thats all. Ive been called worse on here by other long serving members.

Don't know the chaps your on about. Should I?

Provocateur ?

A person who deliberately behaves controversially ,In or to provoke arguments or other strong reactions :(

When i was taught to fish, i was taught to backwind if the fish pulled hard, i still do it to this day, cos thats how i was taught, and thats what i,m comfortable with. Each to his/her own. But i,d never critisize anyone for doing it a different way, if thats what " their " comfortable with. :)
