Otters Found Dead on Dorset Stour

Interestingly...If you google search for 'Otters Poisoned' it will punch up a number of results stating 'Bacteria' as a cause of Otter deaths.
Back in the 1980's early 1990's, i can remember requesting and receiving from the NRA(now EA) water quality documents for the Lower Dorset Stour which covered the lower end of Throop, Iford Bridge and the downstream area to the Harbour.
On this area there is a Holdenhurst Sewage Works which discharges treated sewage effluent and raw sewage at times. The monitored data in these document samples results showed that the amount of bacteria found in the river water was in the 'millions'. It was not uncommon to see used condoms, nappy liners etc in the river at Iford Bridge and to where kids and adults were paddling in the water. This was also the time that the local river and harbour users such as canoeists, surfers, boaters, swimmers and holidaymakers in Christchurch, downstream in and around the harbour, began contracting illnesses related to waterborne bacteria. Food for thought!
There was also a government warning at the time for locals not to eat or limit eating certain sea foods from around here (and elsewhere around the country) as they were highly contaminated from sewage etc which had accumulated in the bodies of the creatures to a dangerous high level.

Will be interesting when the facts are known what caused their deaths..They might have been killed by a dog Otter which wouldent surprise me..The Stour is over run with Otters so given that they are not supposed to like sharing their terretories it was just a matter of time before some young Otters turn up dead and more likely have been killed by another adult Otter..The RSPCA have voiced serious concerns regarding the amount of young Otter cubs that get brought in by the public usually half starved to death after being driven out by other Otters..

I really do hope that the Otters died of natural causes, because anglers will get the blame for this and hysteria will probably follow..:(

Oh dear...A couple of quotes from the recent bournemouthecho web comments.

"The Lower Stour also has a huge rat problem to which the EA has tried to solve by putting down different types of poison this can also be thrown into the equation iro of causation".

"having walked along various parts of the Stour . I am appalled at the amount of rubbish, including a roadside gravel bin that there is both in and out of the river . If these creatures are being poisoned it could be one of many things . Including the idiot who laid poison down at Pugs Hole just recently".

Its a shame that otter died, that was the one that signed my tackle box....it was the only ottergraph I had......

Yet more otter based hysteria, in the natural scheme of things, a number of cubs, even a majority will die within their first few months, from natural causes, why should this case be any different? Lets hope that turns out to be the findings in this case. The thought of some idiots laying poisoned traps on river banks is just mind boggling !

What is certain is that if anglers are suspected of being responsible for this the hunt for the culprits will conducted with much more effort than the setters of night lines.

Just to lighten the thread a little (and for those of a certain age):

I went for a curry last night and asked for a Tikka Massala. The waiter enquired, "would sir like to try our chef's special dish, Tarka Massala?" I asked what it was like. He replied "it's like Tikka .............................but a little (h)otter.":)

Well...if we are all going to insist on rolling out the 'non-golden oldies'.......

I otter know better at my age

Cheers, Dave.
