opening day!

Gary,

No barbel mate just 2 5lb bream:mad: but it was great to be back on the riverback again:) be lucky everyone...

Well i had an early morning start on the Teme which didn't produce any fish for me, I then moved on to the Wye where a few friends were struggling for bites in the blazing sun so the session quickly developed into a social evening with beer and bbq

Not a single touch from midnight through to midday. Cut my losses and retreated to a gravel pit where the perch actually seem to prefer bright sun.

it took 18 hours and fishing 5 different venues on 3 different rivers but I eventually found some willing Barbel - 3 out to 8-8, hard work but good to be back out on the rivers

Dan,
I won't ask the venue but could you let on which river(s) you managed to tease them out of?

Put this on the Wye River page... sorry to bore, its a bit long...but hey, I did enjoy my day ...and you did ask !!!

The day I’d been waiting for patiently(?) for what seems like an eternity arrived… Sadly my plans to get out to the riverbank early was somewhat scuppered by having to do a bit of work first thing… however, I found myself on the banks of the Wye and and getting the gear out by about midday.

First thing I did to announce my exceptional angling skills to the new season, was to step backwards and flatten a brand new feeder!!!! D’oh!!!

Not to worry I was soon lying back on the bank gazing at the stationary rod tip…

A couple of small chubby type knocks then at about 12.45 the fantastic wrap around that indicates Barbel on the prowl…now I remember why I love fishing for these beasties so much !!!!

The first of the season safely netted …a tad under 6lb. and I am one happy bunny!!!

They say that patience is half of the game of fishing.. well I proved it yesterday…nothing but a couple of taps for the next seven and a half hours…but there were things to keep me amused…including this family of ducks swimming past occasionally!!!!

Then at 8.30 the three foot twitch resulted in the this one about 5 lb I would imagine

then at 9.10 the last of the day…. About 3 lb.

All in all not an easy day…but so good to be on the river again…

Here’s to a great season everyone!!!

Well done Stuart and Dan, what can I say...18 hours three rivers and five different areas...that's what you call grafting for a fish...I won't ever complain about changing swims again.....

Very hard graft Bill, number of swims fished = 9 on the 5 different venues!!! To say i was cream crackered come home time is an understatement!

PS I travel light... not me, the gear I carry!

well i got on the banks at 5am for my FIRST ever barbel session

found a nice looking spot to spend an hour in and 15 mins into it i was having my arm pulled off by a barbel which ended up snagging me up and leaving me to make a new rig

so off i went a little further up the bank to a shallow spot of the river where i saw two barbel of around 6/7 lb grazing on the gravel.

so i dropped a bait a bit up stream which ended up very close two them :D

then it happened....one of them moved over to the bait and snagged its self up on the rig FFS .....i try all i could to land it but being hooked lightly in the pec fin it sheaded the hook ...thank god.

so then i packed up and went for a beer as it was blue skys and hot sun.

so all an all not so good me or the barbel.

well done to all that caught and all that tryed :)

Great start!

Hi all,

My first barbel/river session after carping for the best part of twenty years went pretty well for me. I arrived a whole day in advance, planning to fish an adjacent lake for the day, then on to the river at midnight.

However, my excitement over my new river start got a grip on me after only three hours on the lake, and I scuttled of to the banks of the river to bait up my chosen swim while I awaited the magic hour.

My reward for this was an absolutely savage bite within seconds of casting out at about two minutes after midnight, resulting in an absolutely beautiful barbel of 8.08 on my unhooking mat....pure joy :D

A couple of hours later, another 4' twitch of the rod ended up with another stunning barbel of 11.08, followed by fish of 8.0 and 11.04 over the next few hours!!! it doesn't get any better than that, not for me anyway :D

That is what I call a 'welcome home' from my old river :p

Cheers lads,

Dave.
