I've been making up some rigs with the Xpert Power hooks I bought and notice that they seem large compared to other patterns I'm used to, the 16 is the same size as ESP T6 Raptor in size 10!

Have been using the Korum xpert power now for a few weeks and first impressions are good. They are very similar to the discontinued S3 seamless hook,I have compared them closely and the only difference I can see is the eye which is the conventional type(not seamless).

The pattern and wire gauge is about the same as the old seamless S3,a size 8 matches up nicely with a 14mm bait on a hair rig.The important thing to remember when tying a knotless knot is to whip the hair onto the shank anti clockwise whereas on the seamless hooks it didn't matter which way it was tied.

Perhaps Korum think the whole seamless hook project is not worth continuing and have decided to go for value for money and at a 1/3 of the price of some of the top carp hooks these new hooks are certainly that.

The xpert power wire gauge is not too heavy, consequently the hook is very sharp,it also has a micro barb which means unhooking a barbel is easy and it doesn't damage the fish's mouth.;)
I don't know what hooks some anglers are using but I have seen a few barbel with significant mouth damage this season.:(

Another advantage is when snagged up and pulling for a break it is the hook that straightens which for me is desirable.I wouldn't use these hooks for a hit and hold situation as I think a big barbel could straighten it out,but for conventional situations they are my hook of choice.

Have had a whole weeks holiday barbelling and had over 40 barbel this last week with up to 10 in a session, including 5 over 9lbs,4 doubles and a best of 11.2.-all on a size 8 xpert power.:)At £1.25 for a pack of 10 you can't go wrong-grab some while you can they wont be on the shelves for long.

I foolishly bought some of the Specialist variety the other week. I haven't used them yet but the wire seems pretty thin and the eye isn't large enough for line to pass twice through. I guess they'll come in handy, but perhaps not for barbel. Shame I bought four packets. :(

Nice write up, Steve. And well done with the prolific catch rate. :)

Keep em Rich - they're good hooks! I've used the specialists a couple of times and they're plenty strong enough for most barbel fishing. You are right about the eye though - smaller than an equivelent Drennan SS which had me worried at first but i managed both Mahseer and Knotless Knots using a size 10 hook with 0.22mm Ultima Power Match ( 10lb bs ) mono hooklinks. They wouldn't take anything much thicker than that but then they are not designed to. Also had a play with the Specimen pattern but had all my barbel on the Specialists so far - no problems with hook pulls, snapped or bent hooks to report so far! :)

Hi all, I have been using the xpert power pattern for a week or so, 24 hours on the severn, 6 barbel caught, nowt big but the hooks performed admirably, and 24 hours on trent, 4 barbel caught and 2 lost, not to hook pulls though, (getting cut off on rocks ect), again in my opinion the hooks were great and they will be my hook of choice from now on,
Cheers, Leon

Well all this talk about these hooks, i've gone and bought a couple of packs. Much cheaper than the armah points i've been buying....

After using the Xpert Power hooks for a couple of weeks now I've decided they aren't really man enough for barbel, just a little too thin in the wire. Twice now I've had to discard a hook after landing 3 or 4 fish as they were starting to open out, still nice and sharp though.
Also had a rig that frayed through the braid where it came through the eye, never had that happen with T6 Raptors, don't know if it was a poorly finished eye or just a sharp edge to the wire.

Nice hooks for the money, but I think I'll save them for chubbing!

Each to his own Steve but I have not found this,I have landed a couple more doubles on the xpert power hooks(size 8) and they have coped admirably. If you have to discard a hook every 3 or 4 fish then at £1.25 for a packet of 10 it's not going to break the bank:D.

They will open out when snagged up and pulling for a break but it takes a considerable amount of force to do so.I can't imagine a fish exerting that sort of power unless it was a big fish in a hit and hold situation in which case I would use a stronger hook.

Also I have never had a problem with braid being damaged where it goes through the eye,you must have had a bad hook.

I think they are the ideal hook for using a hair rig with the classic wide gape and inturned point pattern,I have had very few of the inexplicable hook pulls that we all occasionally get and will continue to use them.
