New centrerpin

Thanks for all the input, any reason there's not that much love for the super lightweight?

Just with the ultra light rods I would have assumed they would be the one.
Personally, I found them a little uncomfortable to hold. If you want lightweight then look for the newer Hardy Conquest in 4” size. Don’t be put off by the smaller size- the diameter of the arbour is almost identical to my 4.5” Triton True-Pin.

I’ve got one. It’s identical to the BJ but with a few more vents cut out. Like I said it’s a nice pin but i personally prefer the solid back plate. Feels a little more beefy for bigger fish and less places for bits to get into. The vented back plates are a bit of a bugger to clean. My fox bj was the same.
Cheers mate, I was just curious as assumed due to the weight everyone would suggest them but I don't like the look of them, much prefer the solid back plate and I've decided I'm going to get one that I like the look of the most as they all seem to be very similar.

And you get an extra handle for your brass 🤣

The Super Lightweight is also a very nice reel and a great fit for a light set up. I’ve got one on my acolyte ultra for roach & dace. It’s not that it can’t handle bigger fish but in my opinion is better suited as part of a light set up.

Exactly what I use mine for too. It’s great on my acolyte ultra for the becks and small streams. Just make sure you ask for your maggots dust or maize free or it ends up getting in there quickly. Follow that with a bit of rain and youll be picking it out those cut outs for a while 🤣

I'd look for a narrow drum Aerial, or copy (such as a Fred Crouch). A true centrepin which is marvellous for trotting. Both light and robust.
I really wanted to love my Match Aerial, but I found it very irritating in all but the most benign conditions: a breath of wind and the line is caught behind, and when you finally do get it going the line comes off the spool all kinked.

Some folk love them. I’m not one of them 🤷🏻‍♂️

I caught my first 10lb plus barbel whilst using my well used allcocks match aerial, funny enough it was the tenth barbel I caught that day. Here it is...

A couple more from that session...

Yes, they can be a little alkward, but once you master them they are brilliant😎.

I can't imagine how the line gets kinked on a spool, Alan, and would suggest it's more about the line than the reel. 🤔

Really? I thought it was common knowledge that the line was prone to developing kinks due to the angles produced by the arbour pins.

You do often get crinkle when using a reel with a pillard line lay (the more pillars the less crinkle or chance of crinkle) but if your having excess crinkle you may possibly be putting your line on a little to taught.
Also, if you leave line on a reel with a pillard line lay you will get more crinkle. Because I use sensor and it's so cheap I always throw my line away after a days trotting, then re spool whichever reel i'm going to use the night before, or on the day I go fishing....and make sure not to put it on too taugh 😉👍.

I couldn’t fish off the top Alan if my life depended on it 🤣
What I find difficult is that some of my trotting centrepins (eg Okuma Sheffield, Match Aerial) have the line off the top so you wind backwards whereas some of my centrepins (eg caged Purists, Rapidex) have line off the bottom so you wind forwards and I keep on doing it the round way wrong as I swap around!

Reason being I do not like wind wrapping line around the foot of the reel or a line guard on the reel so I can easily "batt" the the reel's rim to retrieve line after a fishless trot. Line off the top and caged reels tend to solve the problem of wind wrap but create a problem of remembering which reel I am using!

None of my reels have line pillars now- problem solved 🙂

Thanks for all the advice, now looking for a new pin to go on my new 11ft 1.75lb Torrix that's in the process of being built.

Is the JW Young River specialist a good shout?
