New Baitrunners

Terry Simner

I reckon I've got about 10 Shimano baitrunners, only 2 bought from new, and about 40 spare spools. None of them is less than 20 years old and some are more than 30, and still going strong. But now, at last, I've decide to buy two new ones.
I've heard folk rave about the blingy 4000D but I've also heard that the bail arm on them is somewhat fragile. So seeing as I carry my rods made-up, in Korum quivers, open to the elements, they get some abuse...up and down banks, through nettle beds and bushes etc. So what should I buy?
I'm looking for Shimano, ~4000 size (Lower Severn/Middle in flood), with a single handle. Any thoughts?

OC baitrunners are great quality.
isn't it about time Shimano brought out a new model though...must be a few years now since a new release?

I have 5 D’s. I absolutely love em.
The bails on the 4000’s only are a bit on the thin side and an accidental drop onto the ground from waist height would almost certainly deform it I wouldn’t lie.
They are a tough reel other wise and mine have been golden.
they are best stored and carried in a padded case mind. I wouldn’t purposely put those bail arms in a position to clang about on the outside of an open quiver. I’d want thicker wire for that.

I wish they would bring out a 5000 OC/D in all (matt) black and a decent line clip.

They would sell thousand's as an all-round specialist reel.
Yeah they would.
im not so fussed about the colours but a 5000 size with a stainless clip would be awesome. There’s quite a step between the 4 and 6

Not necessarily, when they replace with something inferior, to this end there are a lot of Barbel anglers, who were peed off, when they stopped making the XTEA baitrunner. The only decent rear drag baitrunner that I ever owned.

What are OC’s please

Hi Dave,
As per the picture put up by Dave Brooksbank it’s the Shimano Oceanic range which are available in 4000, 6000 and 8000 sizes. The OC follows the size reference. If you search Shimano 4000 OC or Shimano 4000 Oceanic for example you’ll get more detail.
Regards
Bill

I have 2 x 4000 thunnus, just sat in the garage. They are excellent reels for the size etc. However, I have moved onto Daiwa ss2600 reels this year and I cant see me going back. They are old school but the bigger spool makes all the difference imo. Like said before a 5000 size shimmy, is what the anglers looking for.

I'm the same as Terry, loads of 6000/8000 Aeros/ GTEs but all 20+ years old. All serviced but just thinking it might be time for a pair of new ones.
I don't mind the old 6000 reel size - is the OC a similar weight & size to an old Aero 6000?

Little bit shorter being a front adjustment clutch and the spool is shorter and wider
Weight wise I’d imagine quite similar
