I read in the weeklies that Matt Hayes reckons that specialist fishing on the rivers will be dead in 5 years, due mainly to predation by otters, his words not mine, what are your views ?

On smaller rivers thats quite possible as I have seen it first hand in my backyard.

I think that if the cormorant predation can be curbed our waterways will be able to sustain otters.

Conversely, if otter predation could be curbed, could we then sustain cormorants?

Not much chance of that, because otters are cute and furry...and cormorants are ugly birds. Thinking about that....I can see their point about ugly birds :D

Cheers, Dave.

Is it because matt has struggled on the rivers of late?
Ideally what we need is to train cormorants to attack otters or vice versa!

I think it was Matt Hayes who said pretty much the same thing 5 or 6 years ago!! :D

All I can suggest is don't read the Weeklies Nick.

Hi Neil,

It was interesting to also read that he thought the way forward would be stillwaters stuffed full of specimen fish, like roach, rudd etc.
I also read that Mick Brown, long time buddy of said MH, is offering the opportunity to pay for a swim on his lake for 12 months thus giving you exclusive use of the swim for that time, cost £500.

Do I smell the seeds being sewn of a new MH venture????

I read the weeklies Neil to keep up with what is going elsewhere in the angling world as I like to class myself as an allrounder and do not fish solely for barbel.;)

It's not Mick's fishery, he's just managing it............ I wonder who owns it??

My friend was telling me about this article....i haven't read it myself but is it right that after he proclaims specimen river fishing to be dead that he then talks about some lakes he is opening? Sounds like a marketing manoeuvre if this is the case!!

Exactly !

Thought it said MB owned the lake but I bow to your knowledge Crooky:D

Joe that video is qlty mate, made me chuckle !

It does make me laugh that the big name anglers swap and change about with their sponsors, back end of last year one in particular in a monthly mag was banging on about how good his Korum gear was, next issue there he is in his new Nash gear and saying how good that is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, hype, never believed it never will. All this latest tackle for this and that, all the latest rigs etc catch more anglers than fish ! Some developments are good and make an improvement, those are the bits that make into my tackle box,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, not because of the hype about them.

martyn bower tweeted some time back that the EA told him that river anglers may have to find other types of venues, read what you want into this.

I still think its true that most rivers will decline considerably over the next 5 years. My next point is never trust a sponsored angler.

allready seing a decline in sport , so its hardly rocket science is it

spoke about this recently with pals. in my opinion , comercial or managaed fisheries will soon be the only place to go for specimen fish

there is far to much predation of one form or another going on on natural venues where the controlling club plays by the rules

we allready had birds , mink and foreigners stripping the waterways of stock , then somebody thought it would be a great idea to re introduce otters

This sort of thing is happening a lot by all accounts. Hugh tried fences, bright lights....he actually chased the damned things around his pond with a torch...and STILL they got all his fish eventually. Does this sound like natural, shy otter behaviour to anyone? How many otters that were raised on farms and so were used to humans in close proximity were there supposed to have been

I will leave it at that :(

Cheers, Dave.

PS....Be a bit ironic if the otters descend on Matts lake and eat all his fish wouldn't it....
