Landing net

Senior Member
After a new landing net, preferably 1 that folds down, has big mesh and about 30" wide, any suggestions welcome cheers

i have had one of these for 2 seasons and i cant fault it apart from it not having latex mesh like the Korum net. A bargain.

the problem with tackle shops is you go in after a item, if they don't have it, they try and sell you something you dont want....

I had the Abu net for less than a season. Seemed great to start with, but the metal in the arms snapped at the spreader block. Shame, as it was a good concept

In my case Dave, they try really hard not to sell me anything but I can't help myself!!!

So what you gonna do? Sit at your keyboard and ask a load of people you probably don't know??

It is a landing net, he wants a fold up one. There are probably about 3 types available. :)

?? Julian, I thought that 'having the opportunity to ask advice' was part of the reason for having this forum? Maybe I'm wrong. I too have been after a decent folding net (one that can be folded whilst still attached to the handle, when moving swims. Hawthorns can be such a pain) for several years. I've been in several tackle shops to no avail, and I personally would go more by recommendation from a BFW contributor who's actually used a specific net rather than some guy trying to sell me one in a shop. Whether I actually know the contributor or not is totally irrelevant to me.

I've just got a Whitlock folding landing net which was designed by Ray Walton. they aren't cheap and difficult to find but Davis Tackle (Christchurch) can order you one although it could take months to arrive! They are superb for rolling when you're moving about all day.

Jeff

I can't honestly think of a better place than a forum to ask about an item of tackle. That way you are going to get answers from people that may have used them and, mostly, have no vested interest in what you end up buying. I know that I could visit my local tackle shop and they'd be very unlikely to have any folding nets even approaching suitable for barbel. I might get offered a short handled trout net if I were lucky. Good luck to the OP in his search, hopefully he'll have a bit more to go on now.

By the way, i've been told by reliable sources that a VERY big barbel was caught today on the Royalty by a salmon angler (not unusual). If the weight is confirmed, it would be an Avon record if it was in season!

Regards,
Jeff

....and full of spawn?
I know a couple of barbel have been foul hooked by salmon anglers this year and with salmon spinners now zipping about in the low water levels on and near spawning grounds, a few more barbel and other species will undoubtedly be caught to where they may drop the eggs on the bank or elsewhere.
I also hope they stop wading and stomping all over the critical spawning grounds where the barbel and chub are spawning or have laid their eggs, to where future year classes will be trashed and destroyed again, as was the case for the past 2 years..
The EA even 'Electrofished' the Royalty last week all through the spawning grounds from the top of Trammels down to the Roadbridge. I am sure that helps fish recruitment not also!

Jeff,

Do you know what landing net the captor used???

Just ordered one from Jim's..cheaper than Mullarkeys. Yeah, net looks 'short' from pix I've seen (and fine meshed for river)..so already decided to change actual net. Gotta find one of those now, hopefully latex. Hey-ho:)
