Is there an alternative to Paper clips and Enterprise Snag Safe Lead Clips

If snap swivel needs to be left open I am bloomin glad someone mentioned it !
Perhaps a blob of plastercine over the open link to prevent losing on cast ?
Thought about straightening the sprung leg at the end or cutting it down slightly.

"This weekend I will mainly be using rotten bottom paternoistered plastercine with stone or shot pushed in it,along with pva bags of feed"

Cos at 60p each their expensive,,, and the end sometimes breaks off.,,.so I would prefer to carry on looking for another "simple" way of doing it.
Agreed they do the job though.

Fred has given a very "simple" simple way to do it then Mark.;)

Start saving up for more feeders at £1.50 each approx you will soon be seeing that 60p is ok.:D

Hi Mark,

These clips are not something that I am familiar with, but this discussion got me interested so I have had a quick look, and find they are actually only 35p each if you buy them at a shop, the rest is postage (despite the 'free postage' claim ) Mind you, the price probably varies from shop to shop

However, it would seem by the fact that you agree that they work, and that they only break 'sometimes'....that you have tried them. In which case, I wish you well in your search for something that still works but is cheaper...and I hope you let us all in on it if you do find something :D:D

Cheers, Dave.

As I said, the american clips have worked for me without casting loss, when and where the method was needed to be used.
Paper clips are the real cheapo version though and will work.

Mind you, if I was trying to sell something, then you would have got a different answer ....simples ;)

Yesterday i used a 1 inch, double of figure of eight loop to 8lb maxima. Which i through footed into the loop on my feeder, ran some silicone tubing over the top and then clipped to my Korum quick link. It worked fine, this time, was easy to use and exceedingly cheap, saving on postage and petrol. The jury is still out on this though.

As Graham E has said use the enterprise snag clips which suit your feeder, but for me they dont suit my rig and from what i have seen are not man enough for some of my, at time extreme T Trent fishing, but they should be good and are for other less Taxing fishing.

There has been some good thinking here and a good easily available solution may just around the corner.

Ah but it will be Graham, and more good stuff to come.

Watch this space.

Rotten bottoms, brings back memories of bream filled rivers and drains. Buckets of groundbait, gozzers and squatts. Happy days.

Dont mind losing feeders that much,I make my own for a few pence each.
I am more bothered about having to set up from scratch again and again.
Hence the need for effective dumping method.

I have tried paperclips and they do not always open up before the line breaks with a straight pull in my experience.
I have not tried open link method but seems a bit dodgy to me,any others actually tried it successfully or otherwise ? I will give it a bash though Fred
I am happy to use enterprise snag clips (yes obviously I have tried them:p otherwise I would just be quoted 2nd hand like a few others do) in safer less snaggy waters ,but dont choose to in renowned snaggy areas as when the end breaks off it means more knots and fiddling about, sometimes in the dark.
My objective is to find something that can be relied upon to dump exactly and only when required requiring minimum of effort to get back to the fishing. Not a huge ask,and guess I am not alone.

This is starting to make me think perhaps there may be a problem with my knots??
I use palomar at swivel which I until a few minutes ago assumed was as good as needs be.
Line is generally 10lb Krystonite

Get a loop of 6lb Drennan feeder gum and tie a double overhand knot so you create a loop with two short tails 10mm long.

Attach this to your feeder ( Easy if you are using strap leads)

The result will be a link that will break well before any 10lb mono but is enough to chuck an 8oz loaded feeder.

Nice and simple, or you could always bend and weaken your open snap link swivel! :D

Tom.

I have used these links since they came out and when you lose one the hook at the end breaks off it, bit of a no brainer really. I have been useing this solution although some of you might think it not appropreate. I get a stanley knife and cut the link at the bottom where it meets the stalk at an angle. The cut is always clean and with the plastic being of a hard nature springs back to make a tight joint. When you do lose a feeder just simply open up the link and replace it with a new one no need to break all your end gear down. I have cast feeders to 6ozs plus and landed an 8lb barbel when I mistakenly put the hook link on it by mistake. These are the 4lb pull ones and I don't use the large ones as I prefur to lose the feeder if it happens.

Tom
Do you rely on the knot slipping or p/gum breaking ?
I dont wish to sound like Nobby Negative but does 6lb p/gum looped become more like 12lb?
I have tried P/gum and did not find it parted when needed.
I dont know mate:confused:! it sounds simple but maybe you do something suble differently.
Tom I dont doubt it works for you though.:)

Ian
Think you might have something there,I shall try that.:DCheers.
I also normally use Solar large bore plastic run rings,Now,suppose I cut a slot in the small eye to enable it to open up under pressure.Might break the end off I guess but worth trying,

and 100 only cost £4.99:p

Mark,

I have found when tying an overhand knot in the feeder gum the knot slips when the rod is fully compressed with the feeder fully lodged.

When tying a double overhand knot the force needed is much greater and normally requires a good amount of pulling, if not a straight pull resulting in the feeder gum breaking as apposed to the knot slipping.

Only very rarely does the main line go and if it does I tend to suspect it has come into contact with something.

Yes the 6lb feeder gum loop with a double overhand knot may break at over 6lbs but it always goes before my mainline and having pulled at the loops myself the feeder gum breaks away from the knot.

Seems to work for me mate. :)

Hobby. Spot on. It saves untieing and retieing one knot and threading a new Breakaway and a bead on.

It saves 56 secs per lost feeder. When you get to my age you need all the time you can get.

I forget the actual size - think it's a 2 or 3, (available in sizes 2 to 6) but been using these for years. On stout tackle if the lead etc gets snagged they will pull out. You can also straighten then when they do and apart from the lost weight then minimises tackle loss. Usually attach mine to a run ring. Would only recommend them for weights and not hook lengths. For hook lengths then it's the small Gemini Genie snood clip, not overpriced carpy things - easy peezy. For the Gemini then see an old review (circa 2002) I did on the Carp r Us ones - Geminis are cheaper and very similar.
