Is it still ok to just use pellets?

Well, it would appear that more than one or two are suggesting that it's not OK to use pellets.

The ones that I despair of are those that superglue those ponsey little elliptical pellets to hairs. Far too much like hard work, and they cost more too!;););):D:eek:

Here fishy fishy!
3kg of grubbers in 5mm for £10,it hardly breaks the bank, glue two together, and a small PVA bag of broken boilies and low oil pellet and hey presto,
that's cheap fishing.:p

Hi men ,

Pellets are completely blown , usless , you lot should forget about using them alltogether ;););););) .

Jonesy that's far to crude to get a rise out of a willy old trout like me - I presume that I was your target species - or do I have delusions of grandeur?

No, you're spot on. The bait was blown quite early though and it was deliberately crude.;) Highlight the original text and you'll see.;):D

I know I saw it - Ellipse pellets glued together, I know who you were on about. That was especially for you cos you was watching. I use something else that has a hole in it when your not there, no glue and not in the least bit poncey - but it is hidden from view when others are present.

I think that the lesson learned is that barbel will eat just about anything edible, I'm sure they'd take chocolate cake covered in chutney if you could get it to stay on your hook.

Pellets are probably better than anything else I can think of for drawing barbel into a swim but once there they will eat whatever is on offer.

Fruit baits - Esterberry was an established barbel catcher a few years back along with numerous other fruit based baits. I had most of my fish last season on pineapple boilies that out fished anything else I tried, whether they were taken due to the flavour or the colour I do not know but they were very effective.

A fruit flavour I came up with many moons ago that has accounted for barbel and chub is easy to make and well worth a go. Mix 3 parts strawberry (the richer the strawberry flavour the better), 2 parts banana and 1 part vanilla. Give it a mix and away you go. It smells delicious, I always say that if it were an ice cream you'd wolf it down. Its sort of a tuti-fruit, cherry, can't quite place it sort of flavour

But don't dismiss red kidney beans ;)

Dave, concur that some pellets amongst the best barbel baits when used correctly & on the fact that barbs seemingly guzzle anything equally applied at more or less the right time.

John, the write up on the ingredients to each of those mixes is pretty impressive & for some of the mixes its pretty cheap for what they contain. With these ingredients, packaging, VAT & the overheads of the preparation means their margins has to be very small. If they gave any discount they would be giving the stuff away for free!! Have you used these by the way?

Cheers, Jon

Even I don't get a discount, ;) just doing my bit for a fellow CSG member. I do know that Darren (give him a call you might be surprised) was cr@pped on in a big way by one of the big carp bait suppliers.

A few of the CSG lads have been trialling a new pellet which hasn't been named yet and have had some fantastic results with it.

Now Darren is based in Yorkshire he's quickly adopted the local habits and they all shared the one pellet :D

Me? I'm one of those old farts living in the past and haven't got past the cheese paste mindset yet

Weelo - tutti's were single baits, no freebies no pre-bait......sorry got stuck in the cupbopard eating chocolate....

Dave
I tried using something similar but it kept melting when I took it out of the tub.

Mind you I did buy it in bulk from Walls!!!!!

talk of pellets,
i have 1/2 a Kg of grubbers that are about 7 months old, they were silled in a airtight container in the larder, i cannot tell if they have gone,
what do you think???

I would not personally have a problem with 7 months old grubbers, especially as being sealed & in a sealed cool larder. Might be a little lighter in colour? I have used 6mm Marine Halibut Pellet over a year old, stored in similar conditions. The smell of acrid bait should be apparent - I would get my mrs to smell it for a laugh. She always likes to air her opinion on how my bait & I stink.

0.5kg - There's not much there, so I'd imagine you might be buying some more soon? If so, compare to make sure. If I had some salmon oil to hand, I'd probably glug with 5ml (10ml oil to 1kg pellet) to give it a boost.

Cheers, Jon
