Info on shimano bait runners

My ears have pricked up now. I managed to get 2 of the last shimano Thannus ci4 4000 from Felindre Cardiff

My ears have pricked up on the thread now, as I brought one if the last shimano Thannus ci4 4000 from felindre innovations a couple of years ago. Yet to use them!
I recall Mr Bob Gill saying they were one of best reels he'd used for his barbel fishing, so I got the last pair this company had. Yet to use them, as I not a good deal on the DaiwaTDX 4000 QD reels. I'll have to use those Thannus reels, its just that they look to stupidly bling in that metallic blue & gold trim they decided to spray them in. 😂

I wonder if that's the same blue they used on the twin power c14 sra reels. See top of the page I sent you. I thought mine were a bit loud. Beautiful smooth reel but 2 clutches were too complicated for me. Sounds like you have a collection of tackle you could charge money to see, ha.

Those Thannus reels have a flex running through the paint. Shouldn't be all that surprised though seeing that they were built for game fishing on the ocean! And then there's us lot using them for barbel!
Saying that those daiwa TDX 4000 QD are a bit bright too! 😂😂

There's no such thing as the Ci4(+) range. Ci4(+) is simply a lightweight polymer material that Shimano use in some of the higher end ranges to effect a weight reduction. The only obvious similarity between the Twinpower Ci4 (S)RA models and the Thunnus Baitrunners is the material used and the spangly blue finish. They might share the AR-C bail arms though.

I suspect that the posts you've picked up on are comparing the Thunnus to the LC XTB 5500 Ci4+ Medium Baitrunner. The latter is a plain black black reel made from Ci4+. It's also huge in comparison. It's a "medium" big pit reel, at least in comparison to its larger sibling.

Other reels made from Ci4(+) include the Stradic Ci4+ RAs and the Aero XRs. Neither are the spangly blue of the Thunnus or Twinpower Ci4 (S)RA.

I've not got enough experience of using many different baitrunner models, so can make no particular recommendations. Frankly, I barely do anything but floatfish these days. I've retained XTFA 2500s for my lighter Avon/Specialist rods and 4000Ds for my barbel/tench/bream rods. I actually sold my Aero 5010 GT Baitrunners, but have retained a set of Aero 5000 GTE-Cs (because no one pays reasonable money for them). If I were to leger at more extreme ranges on big pits/rivers. I've still got XTB 5500s somewhere. I'm not convinced that any of the above have seen the light of day in at least seven years.

Centrepins and smaller, lighter fixed spool reels (currently Aero XRs) are all I really use these days, the latter only when I fish stillwaters.

It’s not the same gearing or clutch at all.
The 5500 uses their newest Hagen gearing. I don’t know what that is meant to mean in terms of material but as it’s a 1 piece gear so I’ll assume a strong die cast or machined cast aluminum like most.

The thunnus main gear is what they call a 2 piece paladin gear. You have a cast aluminum inner part then this hard coated black paladin outer gear fitted to it which is also over sized and practically indestructible.

The clutches are different too. I couldn’t see a bearing on the schematic for the 5500 assisting the clutch. Just a load of spacer washers sat under the spool.

The TDX is a. Course fishing reel with no baitrunner. Wide spool a faster line retrieve and short handles. Brilliant in its own right but totally different to a thunnus.

I use TDX’s for light ledgering or float fishing with match and feeder type rods.
You can use whatever you like for barbel fishing as I’m sure both will be fine.

Which is bigger the ci4 medium Baitrunner the blue ones which I have , or the 6000 thunnus, and do you know which one is lightest, might get a pair of thunnus for my 11ft 2lb torrix. Hoping they will balance ok.

Yeah they are a good lump smaller but it’s all rotor and spool.
The actual reel bodies ain’t a lot smaller as they are quite a reasonable sized body reel. But the rotor and spool are a lot smaller then an 5500.
I have to ask, why a mini pit reel on a 2lb barbel rod. Are you casting a long way?
