Correct reviewd by people that ultimately have to then sell advertising space back to the manufacturer.


How about some capable examples, not saying buy these but keep an open on the classifieds here or on ebay.

I still own and owned the below models all have proven reliable and sturdy, the 5000 GTE-C I belive the parts are harder to get from Shimano but someone will know more about that than me. In these sizes they will cover all what you want them for and of course barbel.....sure you know that already.

Just did not want to see you waste your money - even one of my local tackle shops suggested I look at other makes some years back.

I think your option is a good S/H Shimnao or one of the Okumas - I use the old style Epix Pro (iin 40, 50 and 60s), the newer ones are quite well priced:

Have a look at the 40 or 55s in that V2 style. You can get 2 for less than £65, they will be better than the Fox's and the older Shimanos. I prefer a front Drag on my Fixed Spools so the only Shimnao I would consider is the BTR4000D (or larger) but they are considerably more expensive (4 times at RRP!)

If you are prepared to consider the 4000D then the XT4000FA is equally worthy and a little cheaper. While I feel that the D is marginally better, the XTFA does have some features that are better. (free spare spool, proper line clip).

If you are on a tighter budget then the ST4000FA and DL4000FA are also worth looking at. The snag being that none of the Shimanos are quite as cheap as many of the reels already mentioned in the thread
 
No I appreciate all the input. I am on a very limited budget at the moment so Im very glad of the heads up regarding the Stratos.

I have been toying with the idea of a s/h shimano for years now. But its like a minefield with that many options/models/opinions out there.

One thing is coming through though (i know its takes a while to get through to me :p ) shimano are reliable treated with respect and for the most part, parts are accessible.

Having said that those Okumas look like they'd do the job quite nicely. But hell, what do I know, I was buying a Stratos this morning! ha!

I'll sleep on it. But Okuma and shimano only now, thanks for the time and effort lads!
 
save up and buy the 4000d, at least you know it's not going to seize up and the clutch is first class.
 
Actually not looking for any new reels as I can still get what spares I need from Okuma. Chris, appreciate the suggestion but it would have to be single handle.
