Grayling

Been on my local river today for my first grayling session of the winter and what a day I've had! After failing to get a bite in the first two swims I tried I then started to find the fish, kept moving as swims dried up and ended the day with 58 grayling, best 1.06 and several more over the pound, and 4 trout. Also lost a lot of fish that managed to slip the hook during the fight, must have hooked well over 70 all told.:)

Graham, on Friday I was using Drennan Silverfish Maggot Hooks to Nylon, size 18 to 2lb for my grayling fishing. I lost two trout due to hooks straightening. If there is a possibility of fish of a couple of pounds I would avoid the Drennan Silverfish maggot hooks.

Try the Drennan Wide Gape Match hooks (provided that barbed hooks are allowed). They have that familiar crystal bend, that I certainly prefer for maggot hooks. They're that bit thicker guage than silverfish and match hooks without being as brutal as a Superspade. They have become my go to hook for fishing maggot on the river. I've had no issues with the regular rogue trout, big perch and occasional rogue chub or barbel.

Chris, thanks for the tip, unfortunately where I was fishing only barbless hooks are allowed. That led to a few grayling and trout throwing the hook adding to my woes :)

I'm currently loving the wide gape super specialist, great hooks, sizes seem bigger than they should be however.

Good bagging that Steve! See if you can catch that many on the fly ;)
I've trotted bite a chuck grayling swims, come back, run a fly through and not had a touch!

Hi Dave. Yes my mistake. Sorry.I meant the wide gape match hooks as above.

Green pack 16 to 3lb. Landed a 9lb barbel on them last week.

Tbh you can get away with 3 mags on a size 12 for grayling if needs

They can be fickle can't they. One of the swims I fished on Thursday was one I fished this time last year and couldn't get a bite on the float but as soon as switched to a tip rod with a small feeder it was a bite a cast!

Harder work today, had to search for my fish and put up with some horrible showers and strong wind gusts. Ended up with 13 fish but the best one was worth the effort at 1lb 10oz.

Best one from today,weighed 1lb 10oz

Really enjoyable day on the Test.
Around 50 grayling with only 2 or 3 under the lb.

Was funny as we weighed any that looked 2lb.
After catching at least 10 that weighed between 1.12 and 1.15 1/2!!!
I decided it didn't really matter.

A few trout and a small grilse.

Iam originally from Suffolk now residing in Scotland ! Found some info on grayling on Tay but wondered if anglers on here had other information.

Fished the Tay a few times over the years, not as good as it used to be but according to my friends making a come back this year, Clyde, Nith & Annan are all stuffed with Grayling but a few are showing signs of spawning. I stopped last week fishing for Grayling as the fish in two of the rivers i fish have started already so better left in peace is my motto.:D
