Good chub rod

I'm after a decent chub and not what to go for. I'm currently using my 1.5 fox barbel special but feel that's a bit too heavy. So I'm not sure what other rod to go for. What would you recommend?

1.5lb test curve will be fine for chubbing. But have to agree,I do like to go a bit lighter for chub, much more fun.I use super specialist 1.25lb test curve twin tip that comes with with a variety of push in quiver tips. Not sure if they still make these but well worth grabbing hold of if you find one or two.Absolutely love mine.

If I'm fishing for chub in a similar manner to when I'm fishing for barbel, I tend to use either my old Daiwa Powermesh Specialist Avons or Fox Duo-Lite Avons.
Both are 1.25lb test. However, the Daiwas are old rods and much more through actioned than many of the modern Avons I've encountered. No quiver tips with the Daiwa either. That still doesn't stop them being my preferred choice. If I'm using smaller baits for shy winter bites, I'll usually go for the Fox with the quiver tips.

I have to agree with Stuart, the 1 1/4lb Drennan specialist avon is a brilliant Chub rod and well worth seeking out. Versatile being twin tipped and has a lovely action that gives you confidence when using lighter lines and small hooks. Highly recommended.

I've got a twin tip 1.25 Avon quiver from the 90s, marketed by Giant and endorsed by Martin Bowler. Its a lovely chub rod though I have had loads of Severn barbel on it when tip fishing for bream.

Hi ben

A lot depends on what kind of river you are fishing?

I use a shimano beastmaster carp feeder rod, this can be used at either 9 or 11 ft and the quivers vary from .5 oz up to 2 I think

At 9 ft on a small river like the dane its amazing, but its also landed barbel from the ribble when used at 11ft

So a quality feeder rod is worth considering

I have been looking at feeders and lost out on a drennan medium feeder on eBay. I like the sound of the specialist too. Only ones I can see at the moment are the new series 7 avons. I'll keep an eye out.

Series 7 specialist avon quiver 1 1/4 also top drawer...

Same for me I would not swap mine for any other rod. I use the quiver tips when chub fishing. Its great with bigger hooks and cheese paste but just as at home with size 16s & 18s when using a maggot feeder.
I'll be out with mine tomorrow and cant wait
Great rod

The beastmaster 9-11' Stuart mentions really is a very versatile rod. I often use that one, too, when I'm after chub.

TFG made a rod called the 'Whisper River and Stream' a few years back. It's 11ft and came with an avon top (which was pants) and a quiver top (which was ace). Not sure if they still do it. But if you can find one of those for a good price, they are a nice blank with the quiver top fitted and meet all my needs on the river when it comes to roach, perch and chub.

If you have a bit more to spend then the Carbonactive series are nice. I have the 12' feeder and for bigger rivers it is perfect for chub, whether chucking out cage feeders using breadflake or using a tiny bit of cheesepaste on the coldest days.

I'd definitely go with 1.25tc or lower. And probably about a 1.0tc is optimum.

chub rods

shimano technium specialist quiver multi-tip.terrific chub rod. unfortunately no longer made, look on e-bay worth searching for.

Although I've not caught anything on it yet (no surprises there!), my new Drennan series 7 specialist avon quiver feels like a cracking rod. If I catch something tomorrow on it I'll have a better idea!

Got a series 7 but the 1.5tc and had barbel to 11lb and chub to 5lb 12oz so far I fish middle and tidal trent and its ideal I have also been using the quiver top with a 2oz tip for still water roach and its ok for that but would have perhaps been happier with something a little lighter for that

Just got my hands on a fox kevlar specialist multi tip bnwt hoping its not too light though, but in my limited opinion it seems fine.

I have one and my son landed an 8lb barbel on it this time last year. As Terry said a great rod and very reasonably priced.

This is the rod(s) I use for 95% of my chubbing (and barbel), but then I'm using the 1.75 avon tops and 2 or 3oz leads. ;)

I haven't used the quiver tip section in years. You need more than just the tip to give and I found the 1.5 top section too stiff and missed too many bites.

For quiver-tipping you want the lightest, most flexible rod you can find. If you breathe on it and it bends 90 degrees, that's the one!

I use 1lb t.c Abu Garcia "Red Wolf"s. No longer made (they were £24.99 new :D), quiver like jelly and give maximum bite registration for minimal resistance. I landed a near 13lb barbel on one quite recently in a tight swim, which surprised the hell out of both of us.
