If i'm picturing your description correctly, that sounds like a very dodgy manouvre Cliff.
Too much pressure on a short section of the rod and the pressure is applied in the wrong way.
Perhaps I put it badly. I only used spine to describe the effect.The spine is very unlikely to be the cause simply due to the fact that many mass produced rods are built without even a thought as to where it is on a blank. A lot of rods bends with it and against it depending on where the rings are placed.
I think it’s just a case that he’s come across a blank less tolerant to something that he’s done many times over with thicker walled more tolerant blanks.
Hopefully a tip section won’t be too much money to replace.
Look on the plus side cliff. At least the rod is still current and supported. Imagine if that was a 15 year old daiwa or worse …. 30 year old normark
