For those that fancy the 4000D but baulk at the price.

This looks supiciously like the 4000D but with some of the twiddly bits stripped off (one piece bail, single machined alloy handle). No idea what the price might be as I can't find them for sale anywhere yet. Listed here but no price yet.

I wonder if the spools are cheaper and just happen to fit the 4000D?:confused:;)
 
You can pick the 4000D up for around £120 if you shop around (rrp is £150). This new model is not as well featured so it'll be daft if it's that price or more. I'd hope it would be available at around £80 with an RRP round the £100-120 mark. The best thing about it when compared to the 4000D is that it comes with a spare spool which might add a few more quid to the asking price.

Interesting to note that the price for the 4000D on the linked German site is €130.
 
The 10000 st ra reels are around the £100-110 mark so these wont be much less than that.

their VAT is 19 per cent as well.
 
I am a bit puzzled that the add in the link is supposedly talking about the new 'this years' model of this reel, i.e the XT. However, the description that follows that header section and photo is actually of the previous DL model...or at least that is what it says in the text :confused:

Knowing me, I am probably missing something :p

Good spot, the text on the Billy Clarke site is lifted straight from the Shimano website too. Someone has screwed up. The details seem to be correct though, the DL doesn't have the ARC spool. The picture is right too, it's not of the DL.
 
I asked in Yately Angling yesterday, Ruth checked the Shimano pre-orders list and apparently this one is not available until January next year.

The XTEA has been discontinued and replaced by the XT RB (Rear drag) which is available now and the XT FA (front drag) which is out in January..........
 
I've had a pair of 4000D's since the beginning of the season and I have to say they are the best reels I have ever had. Yes, they are pricey and only come with one spool but I use the same b.s. line all year round so this is why I got them. For barbel fishing I would have to say they're unbeatable. The drag is as smooth as they come. The Okuma's also have a drag as good (IMHO) but they're not as well made - although they are half the price!
You get what you pay for I guess and although I am not wealthy by any means I would highly recommend breaking the bank to get the 4000D's if you don't need the spare spool because that's what I did!!

thanks Neil. Very useful to know, my 5000 gtc's have clutches I don't have total faith in. I always use 15lb big game line to compensate so I wouldn't need a spare spool really.

only thing that concerns me - besides the cash - is are they not a bit on the small side? there's not a 5000 size is there?

They are quite compact but my dilemma was I wanted a front drag baitrunner and I looked at the new offerings from Shimano for around £60 and they didn't really excite me. I did consider the XTEA's, although they are rear drag but apparently very good. I just found them too big for my liking, so after endless research got the 4000D's. I only do barbel fishing and I find them perfect. But to answer your question, yes, they are a fair bit smaller than a 5000 model. But my God they're lovely!
I think if Shimano did a '4500' size we would all jump at it!
 
I have to agree, in that my 4000D's are the best reels that I have ever owned. Regarding their size, when coupled with an 11ft rod, I find them perfect for fishing small to medium sized rivers i.e. Dane, Dove and Upper Severn.
