For those that fancy the 4000D but baulk at the price.

Jamie,

If it's of help, I have both the Okuma's and the 4000D's. With regards to clutch/baitrunner and fish playing both are absolutely superb. To be honest, in use I can't split them. Having said that, the 4000D's are double the build quality without question.

I would go for front drag every time and both these reels have a perfect drag in my opinion. If Eric's Angling are doing the 400D's for £100 that's a cracking price. I paid £130 for mine :(

There's a pair of allegedly mint 4000D's in todays AT For sale column £160 posted.Have got the number if anyone's interested.

Pete.

I bought my 4000d's from the USA some time ago.
Three things to watch with the 4000D reels. First a really fast take with the baitrunner engaged can spin the front drag dial off almost entirely, same goes for the 3500A 3500B reels .This happened to me twice, once with a 3500B and a Carp hooked in the margins and second with a 4000D and a Barbel hooked on the Thames that took off like a scalded cat.At a guess I suppose the spool is working against the baitrunner facility during a fast run. I have replicated this in the garden, sad I know.
Second the line clip is savage and best avoided especially with fluoro main lines.
Third watch you do not lose the cap that closes off the unused side of the thread that houses the reels handle, replacement is £5 + p&p for a tiny bit of plastic.
Other than that well worth £130 - not.

Just swapped back to the Okuma Epix pro's after having several Shimano's including the 3500b's and 4000d's. I must admit the 4000d's are nice apart from the line clip and and lack of spare spool. But at £100+ each for the Shimano I still went back to the Okuma's at £40 in my local shop they come with 3 spools single and double handle's a bargain me thinks even if they do only last 3 seasons.

I've had a 4000D since the spring and absolutely love it. As a general all round barbel reel it's very very good, with excellent line lay and a clutch that is extremely smooth. I like the big handle too with its chunky grip.

I do have one gripe though, and that is the handle being of a fixed/folding variety has a tendency to unwind when walking to your swim, due to inertia I think as it is screwed on with a left hand thread. A couple of times I've arrived at the riverbank to find it almost completely unwound, and on one occasion it had unwound completely and come off. I was lucky enough to find it a half mile downstream, so its worth keeping an eye on yours if you have one.

What local tackle shop would this be Clive? Do you know if there still available at that price?

Thanks
