Fishing mishaps

I’ll start this thread by sharing my expensive mishap today. After a hard day on the Wye (1barbel and a few chublets) got back to the car in the dark, packed gear away and drove off, 100 yards up the road I had the horrible realisation I had not put my rod in the back, it wa resting against the side of the car. Turned around and went back, you can probably guess the rest... yes I had driven over it, both the rod and reel ! My one year old Peregrine Flood Specialist and X-Aero 6000 both completely fu@ked ! No one to blame but me, still no one got hurt 😢😂

I think we've all done daft things like that Cliff :oops: I did a similar thing years ago. Rod bag leaning against the vehicle and I drove over it:(. Two Harrison rods (BB1's) inside. The rods not a scratch. The reel handles mangled.

Second time. Coming off the Wye and I drove over my carry bag. Crushed Reubon Heaton dial scales. Had to be replaced. Never mind :eek:.
 
Did it last year also after dark, rested my Chimera and landing net pole on the side of my car whilst I put the rest of my gear in the boot. I always put the rod and pole in the front seat. Got home and No rod, drove back to my car park and there was the rod and landing net pole lying in the middle of the grass all ok. Luckily where I park you have to reverse the car round at an angle of about 45 degrees to get out, the rod and pole fell away from the car.

wow as if 2020 hasnt been bad enough Im sorry to hear this mate thats just a terrible end to a crappy year gutted for you

Not as expensive as yours Cliff but was up on the Trent a couple of winters ago and like you packed up after dark, leant my sling with Fox Specialist Brolly in against the side of the car....yup! Drove away, got five miles away and couldn’t remember putting the sling in. Stopped in a pub car park to check and turned round and went back. Found it where i’d parked, run over, aluminium pole bent like a banana but the fibreglass ribs absorbed the pressure admirably. Sort of straightened the pole the next day and brolly still in regular use.

Do you have a rod and reel to keep you fishing? Can’t offer you a Peregrine but can find you something to get you fishing ‘till you get sorted.

Sorry to read that Cliff.

Are both sections of the rod broken? If not then worth seeing what Peregrine or Harrisons can sort for you. Harrisons did me a new top section for a 11' torrix rod I broke,....think they charged me about £70 plus courier charges.
 
Driving back from a winter cod trip, with son, rods on roof rack , driving down a dual carriageway one of the bungees snapped , x4 zipplex surf rods, 2 x beach tripods, brolly , 2 holdalls all flew off and landed on the bonnet of a brand new BMW behind us, how they did not smash the windscreen I dont know, they bounced in the air and landed on a golf GTI that was behind, trashed its roof then went under the car behind .
Lots of claims , the fishing tackle alone came to over two grand, the cars were more.

Plus we had only caught whitings 🥴

Dave, I think yours beats mine !!

I’ll treat myself to a replacement eventually.
 
Some cringing experiences to read.
I have nothing to remotely come close to those awful experiences.

Going back over 20 years now.
I used to have a fox predator dead bait rod. The real awesome ones with the maroon blank. 12 ft 2.5lb. Beautiful rod!!!
I was fishing a lake with my pal we had a rod each next to each other.
He goes to cast out and his bail closed back up mid launch sending a 1/2lb mackerel and 2 oz of lead right through the middle of my beautiful rod.
Devastated 😞
 
Cliff comiserations, however the other told mishaps probably just might make you feel you are not alone, although Dave's mishaps takes the biscuit mince pies and a big helping of Christmas Pudding.
It's never easy for a man to lose any fishing tackle. :(
 
Less of a tackle problem more of a angler problem.
My first Barbel. One of those after work sessions, I’m wearing my work gear and trainers because it’s July. After locating a small shoal on Throop I got them feeding and hooked one. It’s a high bank in that swim and with the fish beat I went to net it, my landing net wasn’t quite long enough and you’ve guessed it I slipped down the bank on my backside and splosh, into the water and thick streamer weed. In the heat of the moment I was determined not to lose the fish, but also in a blind panic as I didn’t know how deep the water was. The fear had hit and hit hard. So I was holding the rod up high and like a cat in a pond scrabbling up the sheer bank in panic, my trainers are bars of soap on the bank side vegatation. I finally got myself back on dry land and then discovered the fish was still on. At that moment I discovered the net was on route to Christchurch harbour... at this point the fish came off. First Barbel hooked, first Barbel lost.

Soaking wet and very disappointed I walked downstream to see if I could find the net. A famous piece of Irish furniture on Throop kindly helped me retrieve my net. I said my thankyou’s and now absolutely dripping wet to my waist I stepped on the electric fence to walk over it, remember I’m wet... I’m not now electrocuted as well...

I don’t think myself or George will ever forget that day, turned out the water was only thigh high and if I’d just stopped the panic it would of been fine. But sometimes you just get the fear, it’s probably one of only a handful of times in my adult life I’ve been truly in a panic. Two weeks later back in that swim with boots on I might add, I landed my first Barbel. Learnt a lot that day.
 
Not me but a lad I know went carp fishing to France and upon arrival at the lake discovered he’d somehow snapped the tips of all 3 of his rods in transit so had to go buy 3 new rods.

To try to avoid rod tips snapping in transit I push a small piece of sponge up inside an empty plastic (Benecol) yoghurt drink carton pushed up a fabric tip protector which I place over the rod tip/top of the rod butt section and then slide that into an empty silicon frame sealant tube. The whole rod including reel is then slid into a padded rod sleeve. It may seem excessive but it takes seconds and rods are expensive and the tips the most fragile part. My tips therefore have four layers of protection including two layers of rigid plastic. (I hope these are not famous last words!). ( If you pack your rods tip to butt I would again be looking to use a cylinder of rigid plastic as protection.)
 
I remember slipping down a path, legs in the air tackle all over the place thought I got away without ant breakages. When I got to the riverbank on closer inspection the tip section was completely crushed. It was a Davies angling (Staines) Thames special 2lb tc with a terry Eustace genesis blank lovely rod absolutely gutted. All could have been avoided if I not been wearing sneakers with smooth soles it also had been raining.
The moral of the story always wear the appropriate attire on the riverbank.
 
Brought a couple of second hand drennan rods. To stop the missus seeing them left them in the cardboard tube and put them in the cupboard. Then sold a couple of rods and grabbed a tube (i had a few), measured it and cut it down for the rods i was selling. Was surprised how hard it was to cut through, put it down to a blunt saw. Turned it up to put the rods in to post off, realised i’d cut through both of the drennans, all sections. Was not happy!
 
Lol, if I had one Richard ! Quick update, back to Essex today, had a good look at the damage for the first time. Rod is gone, both sections crushed, got the reel off the rod and removed what was left of the handle, put a handle from my other reel in and gave it a turn, it did spin but very stiff to turn, obviously internal damage. Reel foot is twisted too. But I did salvage the spool 😀 I guess the rest is going in the bin with the rod.

Cliff is it covered on the house insurance? You never know, it's worth asking.
