Facebook vs B.F.W

Gary Manders

Senior Member
Having been an avid user on B.F.W over 5 years my veiwing on here has declined over recent months , due to F.B where people and pictures are updated to your mobile or laptops. Fellow barbel anglers chat readily online of there most recent captures and friends are made like never before. I still find the threads on here still of interest as it still covers all aspects of angling . So whats your thoughts on Facebook as a internet forum .?

Gary, facebook is brilliant for the forums thats all i use it for theres a few good tackle trading ones on there aswel ;) still like bfw as much

Sad thing is and its internet wide and thats while people give information , I found this week that some sad people give misinformation , for me good thing is that I was able to find out that info was bogus

I like Facebook for keeping up with friends but, for me, there's too much commercialism in the angling groups. Someone's always creating new groups; for bait companies, guides, etc, etc. We have a closed group for my local river, which is good fun, but BFW is a lot more informative, IMO.

Never been, or no longer, on facebook? I have to admit that it can be quite distracting, as can Twitter, though I find it easy enough to 'zone out' for a week or two when I feel the need. Some people are slaves to social media, and that can't be healthy.

This is the best barbel forum by far....
You have to be a member on here to see the river reports which is only a good thing.

went on facebook a couple of times to see what all the fuss was about..
do you want to be my friend??? errr no bugger off.. all i get now is e-mails to tell me i've been missing what's going on... like i really want to know that somebody is now going to do the washing up because they've had sunday lunch, and there's a picture of their sunday lunch.. mind blowing...
i'm sure there must be more to it than that but i'm not really interested..

Nope thats pretty much it.... Not missing anything.
To many anglers on there that are just interested in catching the biggest carp or getting sponsered by the newest company, spoke to one guy on a group who had had some good results a from a pond i was looking to fish, I mentioned I was on the river after chub at the moment and plan on fishing the pond in the spring, his reply was 'whats a chub' . I deleted my account and have never returned......

Use facebook quite a bit to keep in touch with absent Bfw friends. Also it's nice to exchange other non fishy topics.
However, do find some of the aspects of facebook not to my taste.

PS Bfw has a facebook presence.

Bloody facebook, wants blowing up, causes no end of problems, should be closed down. Not on it, never have been, never will be....

....I have had the job of unpicking problems caused for some trusting people by that site, and believe that once you are ' on it ' you can never really be away from it, so,best advice I could give to anybody is dont bother, Oh, likewise for bloody twitter as well.

Harrumph !

No doubt Facebook does have it's uses....I personally joined to contact a person I had lost touch with, and who was a member . However, as Phil and Andy said, it comes with a serious amount of VERY unwanted hassle. My daughter and my grandchildren are members, and as soon as 'stick in the mud old granddad' gave in and joined, I was showered with 'friend requests', which I accepted, because I knew no better....BIG mistake  I am now inundated daily with emails telling me I have something or other 'pending', or 'things that may be of interest to me'. It usually turns out to be that my youngest granddaughter has 'posted a message on her friends wall'....or even that a friend of a friend has posted on 'uncle tom cobly and alls' bleedin wall  I REALLY don't want all that ****. I dare say there may be a way of turning that bit off...but no doubt you will then miss things from people you do want to stay in touch with as well

However, joking apart, what worries me the most about these 'social network' sites, or whatever they are called, is that a species of very disturbed sub human morons (Trolls I believe they are called) use them to inflict deeply anti social and mind numbingly dreadful abuse on innocent people, often those recently bereaved, or with desperately sick or handicapped relatives. I am aware that there have been recent instances were a few of these animals have been caught...but by and large, the vast majority are getting away with causing massive levels of anguish, despair and pain...I believe there are recorded instances of distressed souls committing suicide as a result of such attacks.

So...do we REALLY need sites like this, where such things are encouraged by the very fact that it is so difficult to catch the offenders? Are the benefits (If there really are any) worth the cost?

It aint for me folks.

Cheers, Dave.

Awful places, and yet the originators of F/B are mega rich now, never underestimate the true worth of rubbish.

Spot on David and David . Facebook is the devils work

I don't think BFW is as good as it was a few years ago.

The river reports use to be a great source of info on which rivers and stretches were fishing well, tactics etc, now it's just secret squirrel "I went out and caught some fish today" aren't I great.

Read the river threads 4/5 years ago and read them now, you'll see what I mean.

I should imagine that people are reluctant to share their hard-won information with "lurkers" who contribute very little to the forum. With a post count of just 36 in well over two years perhaps you are one of these, Darren ;)
