eels, how do you hold to unhook them.

Yes rob thats right. Eels i catch that i cant see the hook i cut the trace straight aeay dont mess with it. Some cough the hook up in the sack next morning.

What nac members do you know ?

Me Nick, I didn't rejoin last year, very few trips out and have been after barbel.

It is worth watching the video, failing that have a read of this:
The National Anguilla Club (NAC) - The Eel Specialist - Eel Fishing

Althogh i have only had a couple since targetting them, lying them down and stroking them does work, also worth doing if you want a get a photo as it makes them docile.

Do you use barbless hooks so the eel can do this Dean?

Can an Eel rid itself of a barbed hook?

Is there any need for a barbed hook ?

Clearly I'm thinking hooks for specimen eels here.

I use barbed when I can Steve and yes Ive had barbed hooks bottom of my keepnet/sack after I cut the trace close to Hook.

try getting the eel on its back while stroking its underside gently, t
i used to work in a pie and eel shop when i was a youngster and the boss when gutting them and chopping them up with a butchers knife just used to stroke their undersides with the back of the knife then whammo gutted and chopped and the eel stayed relatively still throughout:)

lets try again, 1st post was how to calm them down enough to handle,
this post is about shedding hooks, now if you can imagine about 5000 eels a week and my job was keeping them watered and taking out the dead ones and isolating the ones that were going that way, about 20% of them had hooks in them, no they dont shed hooks easily:)

Back in the day when we fished for them we used to use MS222 to put the blighters to sleep, made handling/unhooking etc a doddle, once back in fresh water they woke up and off they went, sorted!

Squeeze one hard behind the head and its as good as dead, same if you shove a disgorger down its neck and start riveing about, small ones? just flick the hook out without even touching or netting it and if its deep hooked then cut the line and let it take its chances, you will do it no favours messing with it.

Oh finally, Eel lovers should never go Tope fishing :(

your first posted started well till you went on about chopping them up no need we already talk about how to calm eels down . So 20% still have hooks in so 10 eels I catch only 2 will have eel left in . I say they very good at shedding the hooks then

Dean, i was just passing on stuff i have either seen or experienced mate, hell give a geezer a chance, how many bowls of hot or jellied eels has only one bit in it, by the way most of the eels came by tanker:) from ireland

Simon ,there's one or two on this site could do with a dose of MS222 to calm them , a lot better than lying them on their backs and stroking their bellys , yuk !:D

Hellfire Dean, you mustn't half strike hard mate if only 20% have any eel left in them afterwards

Only kidding mate, I fully support your stance on eel protection. They have lived in our waters since time immemorial, and are now a critically endangered species that should be respected and helped in every way open to us in their fight for survival.

Cheers, Dave.

Duffy and and other lads do like to fish for eels and they in decline big time and some of the comments are not the best . Like knocking them on the head cutting them up. How would feel if we talk about barbel in such way think there be a up roar dont you think I love fishing for barbel and eels as well. The thread is talking about un hooking eels and returning them a live .

Cheers deano. A couple of times i have thought about putting something about harming barbel but just because some people think they are funny when realy they arnt. Why should i follow.

OK lads, enough.

I can understand where Johny was coming from, talking about a job he use to do, and I know it might seem funny to joke about 'bashing' Eels on the head, but please remember there are lads on here that are Eel fishermen and we do get touche about this topic.

The topic was eels, how do you hold to unhook them, lets keep it on track as closely as we can, or we will be forced to lock the thread, and please can we refrain from the insults.

Steve
