Edward Barder Centrepin

You cannot possibly expect to catch bigger fish than anyone else unless you have paid more money than anyone else for your tackle....it stands to reason, surely?

:p::D:p:

Cheers, Dave.

We have gone to the trouble of placing a small hole in the spool's arbour for the line to be passed through so that it can be secured internally.

Gone to the trouble? At eight hundred flippin' notes I should think so! Even the makers of the humble Youngs Purist went to the trouble of putting a hole in the drum. Pretencious twits

Agreed Clive. With wording like that, and the high price, I can't see this reel being a good seller, particularly with what's available for half the price. Some coarse anglers deserve the 'tackle tart' moniker, but we all have our limits. :)

The first batch (of a very ltd edition) have already been sold.

Don't know why some people get so upset. It's like anything else really. We can drive a ford Escort or a Roller. It's just about what you want and if you can afford to by it.

:D

Martin,

Perhaps the makers of Rollers or Aston Martins, are also 'pretencious (sic) twits'.

This thread has reminded me why i left bfw in the first place; folks getting hot under the collar for no good reason and resorting to name-calling.

The second run has almost gone, too. Glad I got in when I did.

I won't be back.

Jon

I'm sure that Messrs Rolls and Royce never told their potential customers that they had gone to the trouble of putting air in the tyres.

Anyway, what does a bloke with tin legs and a Spitfire know about fishing?

Not related I know but I think that Mr Barder was one of those rare types that was great at anything he put his mind to. I seem to remember he took up golf (post leg loss) and had a really good handicap.
:D

remember , these are sold mainly for collectors, you have to be a right tart to use em.

You mean to own them? I can't see many being used even if they are made out of military grade metals and will stop a bullet should you get into a disagreement about who should fish down the pool first.

Re: Edward Barder and Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, CBE, DSO and bar, DFC and bar, FRAeS, DL

One was a quite brilliant fighter ace with the surname Bader.
The other, a quite brilliant rod-maker, reel-maker, accomplished angler and one-time Kennet record-holder...with a different surname.

Incidentally, I will be using my reel. The three friends of mine who have ordered theirs will be also be using them. That means we will be in a position to judge the aforementioned reel's worth.

Mine is a gift to myself, arising from redundancy after twenty years in state education - just in case anyone thought I was a collector or, worse still, pretentious.

Over and out.

JB

Just chasing along the aeronautical theme. Was the Barnes Wallis of bouncing bomb fame, any relation to FK Wallis the centrepin casting chap ?

Jon, after 20 years in state education you deserve a lot more reward than a centre pin , albeit a vey posh one . May your reel spin free ..

good for you, you have to spoil yourself just sometimes.:)

After twenty-five years in state law enforcement I bought myself a Youngs Purist. Then again, I've always been a cheapskate. That's probably why I don't mix in circles where four people who know each other all buy £800 copies of an angling relic.

If you have £800 sitting around you could do far worse than buy one of these. All you are really doing is turning the money into something you can use with the knowledge that you can turn it back into £800, or more, anytime you want. You are spending nothing.

Bleeding obvious really, of course if you dont have £800 knocking around doing nowt you can always say, "Oh I would never spend that sort of money on a reel".

Hmmm. Investing in overpriced reels in the hope that someone might give you a profit? I don't think so.

For a start you'll not dare use it in case you mark it. So it will just be stuck in a cupboard waiting for a rainy day. There are better uses for your nest egg. Can I recommend you look at Sainsbury's, Centrica or Thornton's shares before placing your order? It might not be such a bleedin' obvious decision then. ;)

Hmm

My Paul Witcher reels and even my Lythes. Worth far more than what I paid for them. They are also used too.
