Ebay madness

I sold one of these on ebay this summer, starting bid of £100 and i finally sold it for £280. If you did a bit of home work it wouldnt make anymore than £150, as its not as good as the Titan 2000 or the Carbotecs and thats straight from Geoff Salisbury the Normark Titan and Carbotec designer. Also if some unwitting soul actually won it, they would be able to get a refund as its not a Carbotec blank, but a rod made by masterline and not Geoff Salisbury.

Tom, the Titan 2000 are every matchmans dream of a rod, but until you have used one or if you have, then you would/wouldn't probably know.

The fact that the bidders id is hidden or is on a private auction it is hard to tell if the auction is been shilled, however if you look at a few retailers (not all) you will see a pattern, usually bidders with feedback of around 0- 100.
I can't understand in one day of an auction there are around 6 bids already, people should sit on their hands.

Funny how the words "rare" and "classic" are used to inflate prices LOL.

Very true!

However, if you really want to hike up the price on tackle you are selling, especially cane rods, then you need a word that carries much more clout that just plain old "rare" or "classic". No, the word you need for that is... "Barbel". Trust me, stick barbel in the description of a cane rod and you are laughing.

Or perhaps not. As with all band-waggons, once you've seen one it's too late. Word has obviously got out that if you mention barbel, however tentatively, in your item description then you are onto a winner. A short while back there was a Priory rod on ebay that looked like an old shagged out boat rod, the seller was hinting at it being a barbel rod (priory did make a good'n), it fooled no one.

I went for the triple whammy. Rare/Classic/Barbel sweet....

Best buy on e bay 2 nondescript rods and 2 Shimano 5000GTE's...£100
Reel were great sold on for £98..
Rods turned out to be Tenchfisher 1's from Simpsons of Turnford sold for £96 although now I wish I had kept them lovely rods. I thought the rods looked Hand built thats what tempted me.:)
God I must stop buying from ebay its a terrible habit:rolleyes:

I was also watching the Korum rod as well, could not believe it! If you search for the rod they are on there for £104 delivered on ebay madness.

Years ago I designed a Centre Pin reel, eventually I found two chaps who made me two of them, I have used them for years and I still cannot find a better reel, at the time they cost me £25 each, not bad but when you consider the average weekly pay was £18 10s you will understand they were quite expensive.

Unbeknown to me these two herberts made about 30 more (I found out when I came across a chap with one on the Kennet, he would not sell it to me but offered me £600 for my two) anyway I noticed an "Un-named handle-less Centre Pin Reel for sale on Flea Bay, I put on an auto bid of £300 with the intention of going up if I needed to, I won the reel at £26.80 inc P&P!!!

I also picked up a Speedia De-lux Narrow Drum for £20 because the bloke could not spell, the reel was mint and had never been used (he phoned me and offered me the mint condition box for £20 as well) I am still running it in but I intend to give it its first use this winter.

Needless to say I am just a bit chuffed!!

My point? It pays to keep your eyes open on the fringes of Flea Bay, you can still get a deal!!

Ah, the old misspelling chestnut.

Over the past few years I've watched many Speedias on ebay. I've bought a couple too. I've always found it slightly odd how Speedias always seem to command a much higher price than their equally good, but slightly less well known stablemates, the "Spedia" or the "Speadia". Even less well known is the "Speeedia"; find one of these beauties and it's yours for peanuts.

Fatfingers.com helps with the typos on ebay. But then again, as I said earlier, if you see a band-waggon it's too late. Nearly all ebayers are aware of fatfingers, so, sadly these days, Speeeaaaaadias are worth no less than a plain old Speedia.

Who decides if something is a 'classic'?

I have had several so called 'classic' reels in my possession in the past and to be honest they where rubbish so i sold them on. But that said i will never sell my 'classic' 54's.

Is there a defined list of 'classic' fishing tackle or is it something that is personal choice?

Maybe we should start a list, different thread and add as we go along?

Good business that Clive, glad I could help you out on one of the GTE's :p, to be fair they rarely go for less than £50 + delivery, however I picked up a "Shimana Aera 5oo GTE" for £32 the other day on ebay ending at 8:55 with spare spool and case, so they can be had.

The Chairman on Wednesday

I had some delightful chaps -

Only-Fools-and-Horses-001.jpg

- appear at the Tradesmen's Entrance of the Castle the other day, looking to buy, well, anything, including the Beauchamps Family Plate, for very modest sums. I had nothing for sale, I told them, with huge amounts on Chairmanly charm, indeed, was buying at present; indeed, soon found myself making them an unrefusable offer for their tatty three-wheeled "mo'or" which looked to be just the right size to plug a gap in the Lower Hamster Main Weir which the damned salmon have recently been running.

Our dealer friends actually ended up paying me handsomely - once I had got Deirdre to set a few of her Lady Guides on them. Couldn't get rid them after that.

Forensic and relentless as ever,

B.B.

Its a bit like car boot sales............... years ago you could always pick up a reasonably priced bargain, now everyone wants top dollar for all their old tat!

My Nan brought what she thought was a silver ring this summer from a carboot for 50p. Turns out its 18ct white gold with diamonds worth minimum £500 ! I think thats a pretty good deal !

Yep Sam there are bargains to be had especially when someone does not know what they are selling. I am talking about the guys who do the car boots for a living and seem to know the price of everything.

I picked up a small bird book a while ago, it was quite tatty and obviously had a couple of pages missing, the bloke wanted 15 quid for it, when i asked why he said it was a first edition and that is what it goes for in second hand book shops, i disagreed and walked away without buying it. The same book has been for sale by him in the last three car boots i been too.

I call it Ebay-rage and, as someone mentioned in an earlier post, it's all about being competitive and winning the item. I've bought most of my gear from Ebay, at mostly knock-down prices but I agree that it's advisable to 'google' the item before working out the maximum bid.....

Still some bargains to be had on Fleabay if you keep your eyes peeled. This week i picked up a nice shiny new Daiwa match reel for my roach fishing for the princely sum of £20 inc postage for a reel with an rrp £50.

It be nice if people could use their loaf when bidding on ebay so not forcing the price up for those who are clever enough to log on five minutes before the end of the auction. Someone on here was after a Free Spirit Hi S 12ft the other week, well a "new" and apparently "unused" one went for 200 quid plus postage on Saturday morning. You can get them for 220 in the shops - madness.

What's deemed to be classic is pot luck. Some of the stuff deemed as such is genuinely good, even if I'm not a fan, other stuff really isn't. I reckon that comments from no more than five of the right people on the right forums can have people scrabbling around looking for, and then paying over the odds for, pretty much any old pile of tat. Equally, negative comments can see a good product dead in the water.

There are plenty of examples of gear that many get in a right lather over that I'd not thank you for. As I don't, and never will have, any influence I can froth over whatever I like and no one else will give any credence to what I say. The plus point to that is that I don't have any vested interest. I know that plenty of items that do it for me won't float many others boat. Good for me as I can get some older gear for peanuts. Hopefully, the tackle gurus will refrain from telling the world how great it is, at least until after I've bought it!;):D

I think he may have missed a . out somewhere.

Where do they get these prices from?
