Drennan Super Specialist Barbel Hooks

Another vote for Fox Arma Point ... I've been using SSBP(B) since I had a couple of Drennans straighten on me when snag fishing at close range. But that's the only time I've had a problem with Drennan hooks (close-in hook 'n hold). Fortunately, I've got a stock too.
N.B....they are still available from Germany (eBay) but postage is £13! Maybe in bulk a deal could be done though?
 
When I first started barbel fishing a few years ago I was using the Drennan Barbel Hooks after recommendations on here and Facebok etc.

As the original poster states - I had them blunt very easily and had one open out on me.

Now all I use are carp fishing hooks, mainly Korda Kurve Shanks in a size 8. They are very strong and stay sharp for longer.

I think that as carp fishing is so popular nowadays the tackle gets "tested" a lot more and any defects are quickly rectified. Also the competition between all of the carp brands is so fierce that they have no choice but to make sure that the hooks are the best that they can be if that makes sense.

I've got some similar grappling irons :D

When I had a korda kurv snap in a hit and hold situation I e-mailed korda to explain what had happened and how unusual it was,first time for me in 40 years of fishing.They replied and sent me a couple of packets of their kontinental hooks.They are a beast of a hook,very heavy gauge and just about impossible to open out I would have thought.

Still got some Au Lion D'or hooks knocking about somewhere. Now, those were grappling irons and would never straighten! The old Jack Hilton hooks were extremely robust as well.

Solder blobbed salmon low water hooks - when hook choices were more limited and DIY ruled :)
 
I've used them with no problem, although admittedly, my last 2 seasons have been crap, with regards to numbers of barbel caught.
I've still got a few boxes of the ol Trefor west partridge barbel hook. Now that's a hook!
 
Does no one use korum expert power on here. I've been using them since they came out and have never had any issues at all, and there a third of the price of most of these hooks your talking about. Christ you lot must be made of money.
 
Another vote of confidence for the Korum hooks from me (both power and specialist) and also their hooklinks are quality. I've been using both on the Ouse and the Severn for past year or so and not had one single problem, my local tackle shop sells the hooks for £1.25 per 10
A lot of their tackle is great quality and very pleasing on the wallet, I can only think their gear isn't more popular because of fashion; it doesn't appeal to the ultra cult carpers and hence doesn't carry the Carp tax - which is fine by me
 
Had a 9+ barbel this evening on a size 12 DSSB. No problems at all.
But totally lost confidence in anything larger than a 10..

Andrew, when you compare how many hooks you use in a season, 40/50p a hook, its nothing compared to what people pay for rods/reels/bait etc. Its the vital connection between you, and the fish of your dreams. Don't scrimp my friend, you know it makes sense. ;):D:)

£230 each for Infinities, £3 a pack too much for hooks ;-)
Rods look nice..

Cost is not, or can never be an issue for hooks.

You pay for a hook you know will never let you down, or you make a thread on here bemoaning your eBay specials.

I'm currently at a loss.
DSSB in size 10 or 12 are fine, bigger and they seem to be made of solder wire.
Fox Kuro S4 XS are rarer than rocking horse poop.
Starbaits SSb 5 I discovered tonight the points turn over if you even say the word ' stone '.

Had too many Korda hooks snap. Says a lot when Danny Fairbrass is on national TV sharpening his own brand hooks straight from the packet. Oh, you want us to buy those do you? Why the hell are you sharpening them then?

Last Yard seem to have a couple of decent patterns. A friend of mine mentioned them and I went for a look.
Can't beat Owner, best I've ever used. Just be prepared to sell your sister.
 
Nothing wrong with Korum powers, have been using them while fishing the wye, that river is harsh and really tests a hook, both with numbers of fish and strong flow, and the bedrock...never an issue...or not yet anyway...better than a lot of hooks costing 3 times as much. Do love a raptor also and can't understand why they are being discontinued, I thought everyone loved them?!
 
I am really surprised no one has mentioned Ace Razor Point Boilie Beak Point Hooks ?

( now been taken over by Carp Spirit) Ace hooks have a great reputation with carp anglers as very strong very sharp I had a 54lb 10ozs hard fighting carp on a size 6 with no trouble

Gerry, I think many, .. including myself, tend to stay with a particular hook if it has proved reliable. Why change if it's been doing the business and hasn't let you down.?
I only start looking for alternatives when my favourite brand or pattern is discontinued, or I notice a drop in quality.
I don't mind paying for reliability and peace of mind, rather like the tyres on my motor. That said,.. I accept that there's lots of good hooks out there nowadays.:)
