Doubles?

I recall my dad circa 1957 after having caught 7 pike from the Ashby Canal telling me 3 of them were good doubles. The term has been around longer than me and I'm 60!!!!

My Dear Graham

Whilst it is indeed an honour I can assure you that I have not had an audience with our Sovereign to accept such an undeserved Chivalrous Order.
Furthermore, I hope to catch many more doubles before I get any birthday communication from Buck House.
Perhaps, unlike you, I just look old.
Have a good season. Hope to see you soon

Regards

Mike

Am I missing something here? Surely the term 'double' has been around for as long as people have been catching 'double figure' fish, in any branch of fishing?

When I first saw this thread I rather hoped it was about shots of Bourbon....

Solomon in his proverbs says that a good spirit makes a flowering age, that is, a happy age and a long one. And since it is true, I ask this question, 'Which are the means and the causes that lead a man into a happy spirit?", catching a double is the answer that I would give.
