Daiwa 2.25 whisker barbel rod any good?

if they knew my quality then they would not feel agrieved and would be happy to pay the price as they would have seen our adds and everyone knows that buy cheap, buy twice slogan is not only a myth.........reinstated !!!! ;)
thank you mr. sugar , i knew you would see sence.

My choice in that price bracket (what i actually use) is the Free Spirit Specialist Advanced.
I use the 1.75 as standard but after a season and bit using them in summer 2009 i got the 2.25lb TC for use on for example on the Tidal Trent in flood. Copes well with even 8oz plus in very big water scenarios with very decent fish (ie 12lb+)
See:
http://www.freespiritfishing.com/the-spirit-specialist-advanced-barbel-and-specialist-rods
They go for £129.99 RP but deals are about (especially for pairs)
I prefer them to the Greys/Korums/Drennan/Daiwa in that price bracket and I like them more than the Torrix 2.25 (which cost more).
You can get custom built from various places if you want (I'm not bothered with glitz and tat!), and the standard build is coping very well with the very regular use I give them on rocky banks in dire conditions.

Greys rods

What about the greys rods judging by comments [ not even mentioned] are they" carp " as well? You get two full tips and a quiver carrier tip and three quiver tips for around £175 ish must be worth a look thats the x flite model by the way, you can get a prodigy vx one full tip and a quiver carrier tip for around £120 must be worth a look.:):):)

I have X-Flite barbel (1.5/2lb) and (original) Prodigy barbel (1.75lb). I like them well enough but they don't have the out and out grunt that some similarly rated rods have. I tend to use heavier rated rods than many would like because of this. I'd certainly not pay the full retail price of the X-Flite but at the price they have been seen discounted to, around £100, they are a reasonable buy. I wouldn't have Greys for fishing big rivers with big leads/feeders. They do cover pretty much every situation on my usual haunts on the Swale though.

If I'm playing out on the Trent I've used Korum Twin Tips until recently. They have only been defeated when attempting big chucks with big feeders. Something more specialised is required for that game which I've now got.:D
They make mincemeat of big casts with big feeders but many on here would be horrified just by mentioning the test curve.;):D

P.S. Quiver tip sections seem like a good idea but if you are anything like me you'll find that you rarely use them and eventually stop taking them altogether.

Fancy a belachan burger then  Might need to clean your teeth with Parazone afterwards, but it should hit the spot :D

One can only assume that in Indonesian/Chinese cooking it is used in minute quantities. Mind you, baiting up your swim with a No.16 or a Char Sui pork or whatever might do the job...may be the next 'in' bait :D

Cheers, Dave.

rods rods rods

I already have one barbel rod 1.75 greys prodigy as was previously mentioned by someone i to feel this rod is a little lacking in power for heavy flows, i intend to fish the tidal ouse below york that doesnt appear to pull that hard in comparison to the tidal trent that i also intend to fish.I have a couple of 2.50 tc shimano carp rods i will probably give these a spin see how i get on .
Although i am tempted to buy a dedicated non quiver tip type barbel rod, although its probably a case of angler being caught by rod rather than fish.
As i am new to specific barbel fishing i will probably not buy anything on an impulse just yet.

Steve, its a very hard dilemma you have there, my best advice would be to try out quite a few rods in the shop, with line threaded and the max weight you will be using on said river with some flood on. Had a look at a wychwood maimiser 13 foot 2.5/2.0 twin tip, has a strong butt section which you will need for larger leads, good price too.
I used my Torrix 2lb, 2 weeks ago on the TT(Tidal Trent) when it was low and clear, and in my honest opinion find it doesnt have the power in the butt for this river. On a small/ Medium river you can certainly put some authority onto any Barbel with this rod, but i found it lacking in the butt for the TT.

Good luck

I have a pair of Freespirit Barbel Seekers, they handle the Wye in flood.

For most of my other fishing i will use my rod built by Dave Lumb, 10ft hit 'n' hold built on a Harrison blank............... best rod i have ever bought by far! Drop him a line and discuss what you need, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thats odd....they are British, and I thought it was only the Chinese that were a bit lacking in the butt department :D

time and time again on here the same rods seem to come out on top Korum Neoteric (now Korum Precision

Surprised to see that, I didn't realise Korum had stopped doing the Neoteric. The Precision Specialist seems to be £20 cheaper but is either 1.75 or 2lb, not a twin tip. Shame, it was a good rod. I just hope the new one is as good.

The twin tip's are still available but I think the Precision has replaced it long term maybe Chris Ponsford would know. I think he's involved with Korum.

Just to let you know, I have it on pretty good authority that the Neoteric Twin Tip is still going to be available alongside the Precision range. There's a chance that there will be a cosmetic upgrade though.
Good news for many, except those that might have a pair of Neoteric Twin Tips to sell!;):D

For those after a new rod, Climax in Sheffield have slashed all fox barbel rods by 40%.

what tackle shops are left in sheffield now, i went to a good one years ago just up the road from bennets, bennets i hated.

Yep,far as I know the good old Neotirics are still being produced, just as well as mine have had a few years of abuse .
The new Precisions are very nice, and better built ,and the 2lb version is a great allrounder and will handle hefty leads and feeders .
I would still like to see a shorter Korum Barbel rod for the small rivers, and I currently use a prototype I found in the corner of boss man ,Ricky Teales office, dont tell him I have it :D

That will have been Calcotts, closed after the flooding in 07. Billy Clarkes is the one for me now.

Greys have very soft blanks - and, dare I say it, so do Harrisons. In terms of Greys, if you think that you need a 1.75, buy the 2.0
