Counting down..............

Graham Elliott

Senior Member & Supporter
Do any others count down before they finish for the days fishing, or even before they pull in to recast?

I'm getting worse. Usually.......I'll count to 200 before I pack up.......(3 x 200 later, I might do....)

Has it ever given you a super fish for those similarily afflicted.

That's funny Graham - I thought it was just me.
I normally count down from 100, slowly and deliberately, then often another 50, before realising that if I actually hooked a fish I'd be well past kicking off time and could get banned.
Have had a few face savers in that last 100 (150) though. :)

I normally say il have a fag then pack up 20 fags later im still there :D. Last cast is always last hour lol

Usually plan a time to leave then think another half hour , then get call from mrs telling me I am 2 hours later than expected :)

I just go with my gut, sometimes you feel it might happen and stay, others I pack up pronto at the time I planned. Usually i stay !!

Well i never have , but many moons ago, probably at least 10 years, one occasion springs to mind Graham, when fishing a swim that if i catch from always seems to be a late fish, usually after midnight.
On this occasion i'd been in the swim from late afternoon, and settled down for a long wait, knowing if i had one it would likley be late.
I sat there without so much as a twitch all evening, midnight came and went - still nothing.
I made up my mind i'd give it till 2am and not second later, as the last minute came up on my watch, i did on that occasion watch the seconds tick away, having made up my mind to pack up on the dot, well the seconds hand hit the 12, and i duly reached for my rod, ( fishing only one in those days ) i'm not sure if my fingers touched the cork or not, but could only have been a fraction away if not, when i had the most violent wrap round :eek:
without exageration i nearly S**t myself !
I've had Barbel take the bait on the drop, and as i lifted the bait to reel in, but nothing can compare to the shock of that i can tell you, i remember playing the fish, and all the while still shaking like a leaf !
Never to be repeated in a million years.

Ian.

No, I can't count so just look at my watch and say "another 10 minutes" constantly until I am well late, have had quite a few staying half hour later than planned.

Always have the traditional last cast but its never just one, usually three or four later;) caught a fair few stopping later than Id planned. I count up sometimes when thinking of re-casting especially when I think its on the money.

I normally set a time and then gradually clear away and tidy up before reeling in. Sometimes though you have a sudden feeling that you have been doing it wrong all day and a sudden switch of tactics, bait or where you are casting to has results.

Graham like Mark I thought it was only me. I decide to re cast or pack up, and slowly count to 10 then strike. I have never connected with a fish during the count down, and think to myself you have been at it for 10 hours so what makes you think 10 seconds will make any difference.

I usually decide when I'm going to reel in and stick to it. However a few weeks ago I recieved a text seconds before reeling in time and decided to answer it there and then. You can guess the rest....mobile phones eh, who'd have 'em.

I always count down before packing up. I cheat and when I get to a 100 I add a few more and slow down. It worked though once last October.

Well I'd packed everything but the landing net and a rod still out. I should have gone an hour ago and would be late for getting home. I'd counted to a 100, then counted another 30 and was giving it a final count to 20... just to give myself one very last chance of not blanking. 15, 16, 17, 18...who am I kidding, I hadn't had more than a couple of sniffs all day. Oh well...19, 2.. then SCREECH and HIT! and 8 or 9 minutes later 12 1/2 LB of tubby barbel on the bank. But for a few seconds grabbed I'd had the perfect day in the end. Thanks to Graham (not GE) who was pegging out for a match the next day, for the assist in netting and weighing.

The countdown method of catching only works if you really seriously are on the last gasp, 'this time I really will reel in', numbers. That, or my luck was down to a 2 hour delay in Tadley Tim's infamous 'tap your rod 3 times with a walking stick method'?

Ha!!

Used to do it all the time.

These days not being able to see a float any more is a good indicator of home time;)
